Eagle girls earn top seed in basketball rankings

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school girls’ basketball play last week, Mount Abraham locked down the top seed in Division II, Otter Valley apparently sealed a home playoff game, and Vergennes avenged its earlier loss to Middlebury.

Saturday concluded the girls’ basketball regular season, and the Vermont Principals’ Association will release official pairings on Monday morning.

OV boys hoopsters move up in Div. II

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school boys’ basketball action late last week, Otter Valley won to keep moving up the Division II standings, but Middlebury and Mount Abraham lost on the road.

The Commodores and Tigers’ Thursday games were moved to Monday, when MUHS will visit Missisquoi, and VUHS will host St. Albans.

Teams are entering their final week of play this week. The Vermont Principals’ Association will announce pairings next Monday.

Opinion: Resist Middlebury College's sprawl further into town

Middlebury residents:

Again, Middlebury College tries to creep further into town. Have you any idea how much property they have appropriated? Before even thinking of voting for losing a marvelous classic building and giving up more land, get a list of what Middlebury College owns in town without being taxed.

Trying to squeeze the town property further into a small space behind the library is ridiculous — no parking, period, and the town gets smaller.

Guest editorial: Having skin in the game

This week’s writer is William J. Mathis, managing director of the National Education Policy Center and a Goshen resident. He served as a Vermont superintendent of schools and taught education finance at the University of Vermont.

The school funding debate is particularly toasty this town meeting season. With some reason! Most observers agree that our per pupil education costs are among the highest in the nation. When compared to inflation or portion of the gross state product, however, the increases are much more modest.

Vergennes Police Log: Multiple incidents keep city police busy

VERGENNES — Vergennes police responded to a variety of incidents between Feb. 3 and 9, including an alcohol-related case at Northlands Job Corps and a suicide threat.

During that week, Vergennes police:

•  On Feb. 3 dealt with a minor two-car accident in a Panton Road parking lot.

•  On Feb. 3 directed traffic at a home fire on Third Street.
