Although we in the Great White North are all still suffering through snow, ice and temperatures colder than an NFL owner’s heart, rumor has it that the first day of spring coincides with the publication date for this issue of the Independent.

My dogs, who these days often dig in their heels at the doorway in protest when asked to venture out into the frozen tundra, certainly don’t trust the calendar.

Saints march past Panther men's lacrosse

MIDDLEBURY — The early season struggles continued on Tuesday for the Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team with a 14-7 loss to visiting St. Lawrence that dropped the Panthers to 1-4.

A combination of youth — only four starters return from the Panthers 2013 13-3 team — and a tough early season schedule — the 3-1 Saints were the third top-20 NCAA Division III team Middlebury has faced — has contributed to the slow start.

Addison Otters wrap up swim season

TROY, N.Y. — Nine athletes on the Addison Otters Swim Team qualified for and participated in the Adirondack Gold Short Course Championship this past weekend at the Robison Pool in Troy, N.Y. Peter Bicknell coaches the Bristol-based team.

Qualifying for this meet is very difficult and gives the athletes the opportunity to swim against the best swimmers in the Adirondack league. To attend this meet the swimmer must have swum in two Adirondack meets in this swim season (October-March) and obtain a qualifying time.

Otter youth wrestlers excel at area meet

MIDDLEBURY — Wrestlers from the Otter Valley youth program fared well this past weekend at an elementary school-age tournament held in Middlebury; according to a team official five Otters finished first and five more earned second-place finishes.

Taking first place for the Otter team were Caleb Whitney, Isaac Whitney, David Williams, Chase Cram and Ethan Corey. The team’s second-place finishers were Ethan Blow, Grant Blow, Nick Marcoux, Sam Martin and Simon Martin.

Panther women's lacrosse moves to 4-0

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team ran its record to 4-0, 3-0 in NESCAC play, with a pair of recent wins. The Panthers ended last week ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division III.

On Saturday, Middlebury scored the final six goals in a 10-4 win over visiting Wesleyan (2-3, 0-3) in the Panthers’ home opener.

Opinion: Lawmakers urged to endorse bill for paid sick days

There is something going on at the Vermont Statehouse in Montpelier that Vermonters need to pay attention to. The House bill to grant paid sick days (H.208) to Vermont workers has stalled because our representatives are apparently more interested in representing the retailers, the grocers and the Chamber of Commerce than in acting in the interest of the workers of this state, who voted them into office.

Middlebury distance relay team excels at NCAA meet

Panther women's tennis hits 3-0 mark

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s tennis team, ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division III, on Saturday improved to 3-0 with a 7-2 victory over 17th-ranked M.I.T.

The Panthers will next take to the court for five matches out in California during its spring break trip, starting with a visit to 12th-ranked Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday.
