Matt Dickerson: A tangle of anglers

Posted on March 10, 2016 |
By Matt Dickerson

So what do you call a collection of similar creatures? For most common animals you probably know. Wolves, coyotes and dogs gather in packs. Unless they are newborns, in which case we have a litter.

There are prides of lions and broods of chickens. A gathering of sheep is called a flock. So is a gathering of geese. Unless they are flying, in which case they are called a skein. Or if they are grounded they can be called a gaggle.

Opinion: Porter's approach to women's health is beyond reproach

Posted on March 10, 2016 |
By Jodi Brown

I write to address an opinion published on March 3 under the headline “Changes at PMC to affect women” which spoke of the combining of practices of the midwives and the obstetricians at Porter Hospital. I proudly respond as both a patient of Tapestry Midwifery and a provider at the new Porter Women’s Health. I am the most recent physician addition to the former Addison Associates in OB/GYN (AAOG), having started this past August. I also started my new position when I was 26 weeks pregnant.

Opinion: Porter decisions are affecting care

Posted on March 10, 2016 |
By Christina Wadsworth

Word on the street has it that Porter is axing doctors, nurses and relationships with practices.

Jane Lindholm’s “Vermont Edition” articulated the challenges, and it is clear from the word on the street and the radio program’s guests that these challenges are being addressed without transparency to those affected.

Greg Dennis: Is 'Trumpmania' a media phenomenon or news?

Posted on March 10, 2016 |
By Greg Dennis

Has the media’s obsession with Donald Trump gone too far?

On the cable news networks, it’s often All Trump, All the Time. That has prompted the media’s critics — who are never in short supply — to question this obsession with the coarse braggart who is leading the Republican presidential race.

Change in solar law eyed

Posted on March 10, 2016 |
By Mike Polahamus of VTDigger.org

Public comments were due Wednesday on new rules that developers say will kill independent utility-scale renewable energy growth in Vermont.

Utilities say the changes are needed to protect ratepayers from unfavorable energy contracts and avoid expensive infrastructure upgrades that conflict with the state’s goal of encouraging small projects throughout the state.

Childcare funding is level

Posted on March 10, 2016 |
By Elizabeth Hewitt VTDigger.org

A state program that helps low-income families afford childcare is not slated for an increase in the state’s budget for the next fiscal year. That could be a further stress on a program that is already stretched thin due to a number of factors — including the high number of young children in state custody.

Gov. Peter Shumlin’s budget proposal for fiscal year 2017 does not include more money for the childcare financial assistance program.

Opinion: Canadian friends invite me to move north

Posted on March 10, 2016 |
By Peter Grant

Canadian friends are inviting me to move to Canada before Trump has a wall built, paid for by Canada.

No one has asked how Trump will force Mexico to build a wall. How many bombs will it take before Trump realizes that Mexico can’t afford to restrain its criminals, much less pay for a wall? Does Trump think before engaging his mouth?

I remember when people around the world were laughing with puzzlement when Reagan was elected back in 1980.
