ADDISON COUNTY/BRANDON — Several Addison County and Brandon churches have set their schedule for special Christmas events and services.
Brandon Baptist Church will have a candlelight Christmas Eve service on Monday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m.
St. Mary’s Parish will hold a penance service on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 7 p.m. There will be a Christmas Eve service Monday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m. There will also be a Christmas Day Mass, Tuesday, Dec. 25, at 10 a.m.
MIDDLEBURY — Tuesday was not a good night for the already inexperienced Middlebury Union High School girls’ basketball team to be missing two starting forwards: Visiting Fair Haven is a balanced, veteran team that could well be in the Division II title mix.
Predictably, the Slaters took advantage in their 53-10 victory, dominating the boards with a 43-21 rebounding edge while their press and relentless man-to-man defense forced 24 Tiger turnovers.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A Middlebury 12-year-old placed in the top 10 percent of a national cross country running race in Albuquerque, N.M., this past Saturday.
Willem Landis, a seventh-grader at Middlebury Union Middle School, placed 25th at the USA Track and Field Junior Olympic Cross Country Championship in the Midget division for 11- and 12-year-old boys. He covered the 3,000-meter course at Balloon Fiesta Park in 11:00.07.
BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union High School girls’ basketball team on Tuesday coasted in its season opener, topping visiting Poultney, 58-20.
In the process, the Otters made a winner of new head coach Steve Keith in his debut; Keith is also the school’s first-year activities director.
Keith said he had the Otters press Poultney out of the gate and they took a big early lead on their way to the big win.
If anyone out there doesn’t believe in Santa Claus, please check out the kid’s picture on our Dec. 6 front page smiling at St. Nick in wide-eyed wonder. Case closed.
Now that it has been once again re-established that Santa is real, I have a few sports-world requests for the Sage of the North Pole.
Many people deserve the gift of their dreams: Santa should give them what they want, which herein will be defined as “Visions of Sugar Plums.”

Suppose that an investor you admire and trust comes to you with an investment idea. “This is a good one,” he says enthusiastically. “I’m in it, and I think you should be, too.”
It is usually a good idea to listen to your mom. Back in the ’60s and ’70s my mom was a very active volunteer with the Duluth Symphony. As an accomplished pianist and organist she was eager to keep at least one toe in the world of music while the rest of her was busy raising me and my brother and sister. She served on the symphony board and a few times a year she and my dad would break out their season tickets, get dressed up and head out for an evening of high culture. My brother and I would stay home and wreak havoc.
