The front page of your Oct. 20 edition presents a contrast. In the top photo, two Middlebury Union High School soccer team members are laughing, happy together as they carve pumpkins for the Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

At the bottom of the page is a picture of a young man identified as “Prolific burglar gets 13 years to life.”

WomenSafe's Smith steps down after eventful tenure

MIDDLEBURY — Naomi Smith had spent several years as a Certified Public Accountant when, during the late 1990s, she felt a tug to a decidedly different profession. Instead of counting numbers, she wanted to become a person who other women could count on if they had become victims of domestic or sexual abuse.

So Smith took a job as shelter program director for Burlington’s Women Helping Battered Women organization.

Bristol hosts Scouts parade honoring vets from around the state

BRISTOL — Hundreds of people lined the streets of Bristol Saturday morning as the town played host to the 16th annual Scouting Salute to Veterans parade.

Billed as one of the largest parades in Vermont, the event is put on by the American Legion and Green Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts of America to honor those who have served in the military, law enforcement and first-response organizations. Each year the parade is held in a different Vermont town.

Tigers go for repeat in D-I vs. undefeated St. Johnsbury

MIDDLEBURY — The next game for the undefeated defending Division I champion Middlebury Union High School football team is the D-I final at Rutland High School on Saturday, and the next opponent is also undefeated St. Johnsbury.

On this past Friday, the top-seeded, 10-0 Tigers posted their fourth shutout in their past five games, 42-0, over visiting No. 5 Colchester. On Saturday, No. 2 St. Johnsbury defeated No. 3 Essex, 26-6.

In the past two-plus years, I’ve been repeatedly asking versions of the same question to many happy plaque-carrying, medallion-wearing and trophy-hoisting athletes: How did you do it?

Of the five questions journalists are taught to answer when researching and writing articles — who, what, when, where and why — the last is by far the most intriguing.

How is really a variation of why. “How did you do it?” equals “Why was the team so successful?”

Middlebury women race to NESCAC victory

MIDDLEBURY — Running on its home course on Saturday, the Middlebury College women’s cross-country team, ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division III, edged No. 7 Williams for the NESCAC championship, 38-47.

The league title was the 13th for the Panther women, and Saturday marked the first time the team hosted the NESCAC championship meet since 2003.

The Panther men, ranked No. 9, took third place with 80 points behind No. 3 Williams (39) and No. 7 Colby (76).

Panther women's soccer upsets Jeffs in quarterfinal

AMHERST — The fifth-seeded Middlebury College women’s soccer team on Saturday topped host No. 4 seed Amherst, 1-0, to advance to the NESCAC semifinals for the 11th time in 15 years. The Panthers improved to 10-6 and Amherst dropped to 11-5.

Top seed Williams will host the NESCAC final four this weekend. The Panthers will face Williams in an 11 a.m. semifinal on Saturday. No. 2 Bowdoin will meet No. 3 Connecticut in the other contest at 1:30 p.m. The winners meet for the NESCAC title on Sunday at noon.
