Sunshine Week is a time to celebrate one of our nation’s most basic values, the public’s “right to know.” Our very democracy is built on the idea that our government should not operate in secret. James Madison, a staunch defender of open government, whose birthday we celebrate each year during Sunshine Week, wisely noted that for our democracy to succeed, people “must arm themselves with the power knowledge gives.” Transparency enables the American people to hold their government accountable.

Few people touch the lives of families as directly as do obstetricians, and Dr. Alan Ayer literally touched the lives of thousands of families during his 36-year-career in Middlebury while delivering more than 6,000 babies. For almost all of those years, he worked with his founding partner, Dr. James “Chip” Malcolm, at Addison Associates in Obstetrics and Gynecology, a practice they jointly established in 1980.

Panthers take 8th at NCAA meet

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — Middlebury College’s Rob Cone claimed the men’s giant slalom national title on March 12 at the 2015 NCAA skiing championships in Lake Placid, N.Y., to highlight the Panther team’s efforts in the multi-day competition.

The Panthers finished eighth overall, with 230 points, in the NCAA event, which was won by the University of Colorado with 505 points, followed by Denver (478), Utah (471) and Vermont (443).

Panthers' Maxwell wins NCAA D-III mile

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Middlebury College senior Alison Maxwell won the women’s mile on Saturday to highlight her team’s efforts at the 2015 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Maxwell finished in 4:56.17, just ahead of Eastern Mennonite’s Hannah Chappell-Dick (4:56.81) in a sprint to the finish line.

Vergennes youth wrestlers fare well

BRANDON — Fifteen members of the Vergennes Area Youth Wrestling Club won age-division titles on Saturday at the Rumble in the Valley, a tournament at Otter Valley Union High School. The Vergennes team also won the tournament.

Club officials said the organization has 51 members this season, of whom 47 attended Saturday’s tournament. Of those athletes, 37 placed in the top three in their divisions.

Matt Dickerson: More than sports played outdoors

“Just what is an outdoor sport, anyway?”

That is the question I am often asked when people discover that I am a famous outdoor sports columnist. Which is to say, if I ever become a famous outdoor sports columnist, I imagine somebody might ask me that question.  Indeed, I spent a great deal of time imagining the questions my devoted fans will one day ask me if I ever have any devoted fans. Do I use steroids? Have I ever blood-doped? How long before I retire?

Therefore, I thought it would be prudent to prepare a few answers. Just in case.
