Vermont orchards adapt to warmer climate

SHOREHAM — Farmers always have to deal with unpredictable weather, but growers of perennial plants like apple trees face additional difficulties with a changing climate. Vermont orchardists have been dealing with the reality of global warming — successfully for the most part — for years, according to Champlain Orchards co-owner and head orchardist Bill Suhr.

Middlebury College grad to read from novel about campus sexual assault

MIDDLEBURY — Maria Padian holds fond memories of her undergraduate studies at Middlebury College, during which she attended the Bread Loaf Writer’s Conference in Ripton.

“There I was, this 21-year-old student, surrounded by all these grown-up, professional writers,” she recalled in an autobiographical message on her website, mariapadian.com. “And ‘ouch,’ were they honest; brutal, actually.”

Shoreham seeking funding for town shed

SHOREHAM — The Shoreham selectboard is aggressively searching for grants to help defray the cost of a salt-sand shed that they said is urgently needed to ensure the community can effectively keep its roads clear and safe during winter weather.

Shoreham currently stores the bulk of its salt reserves in Bridport, which has generously offered space in its shed. Shoreham facilities can now only store around a tandem truck load’s worth of salt at this point, according to Selectman Loren Wood. There are roughly 62 miles of road in the town of Shoreham.

Bristol to host hearing on pro-growth zoning laws

BRISTOL — The Bristol Planning Commission is seeking feedback from Bristol residents on its proposed changes to town zoning that aim to increase development to build a bigger tax base. It will explain the changes and take feedback in a hearing Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m., in the town offices at Holley Hall.

City looks to loan fund to help restaurant and youth club

VERGENNES — Tapping a two-decade-old revolving loan fund, the Vergennes city council on Sept. 27 agreed to loan $95,000 to the owner of the School Street building that houses Bar Antidote and the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes to allow expansion of the restaurant’s space and creation of handicap access to the youth club.

Well, the stars have finally aligned. The duo on Aug. 30 opened “Parlour,” a full-service beauty salon and spa that makes good use of their respective talents.

Local murder mystery to be subject of upcoming film

MIDDLEBURY — The Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History in Middlebury is assisting in current attempts to examine the murder of three individuals whose remains were found on May 15, 1935, in a remote location off Burnham Drive in East Middlebury, Vermont, on land that is now part of the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST) snowmobile trail.

Local woman prepares for lung transplant

FERRISBURGH — The Newell family has a lot riding on an upcoming spaghetti dinner later this month.

Joanne Newell, 62, was diagnosed 12 years ago with pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis, a rare lung disease that causes organ deterioration. Now the damage is so extensive that a double lung transplant is necessary.

The Ferrisburgh resident is about to complete yet another battery of tests to put her in line for double lung transplant surgery at Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital.
