Dog Lake Trading Co. offers some fetching wares

MIDDLEBURY — Dorothea Langevin and Cindy Strate have spent the past few years on the road marketing their artistic creations together at various shows throughout the state.

The two Addison County women have now laid down some retail roots close to home, in downtown Middlebury, with their new store called the Dog Lake Trading Co. at 9 Frog Hollow Alley.

Friday's Arts Walk in Middlebury to showcase crafters, artists and blogger

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Arts Walk takes place on Friday, Sept. 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. in downtown Middlebury and the Marble Works. Local artists will be showcasing their craft in local businesses. This month will feature many wonderful examples of photography, painting, sidewalk chalk art and recipe demonstrations.

Some of the featured locations, events and exhibits are highlighted below.

Lt. Gov. Scott enters contest for governor

VERMONT — Republican Lt. Gov. Phil Scott made official what has long been assumed — he will run for Vermont governor in 2016.

“I’ve made this decision because I believe too many families and employers are on the economic edge,” Scott wrote in his announcement letter Tuesday.

Scott, 57, says he can bring “new energy” and people of “different backgrounds” together. Vermonters “crave” a change in leadership he says in large part because the state is in trouble financially.

Middlebury College to present symposium on inequality

MIDDLEBURY — Is economic inequality a threat to democracy and the American Dream? A Middlebury College symposium, “Ill Fares the Land: Inequality in the Twenty-First Century,” will address these and other related topics on Friday, Sept. 18. The event, the college’s fourth annualInternational Politics and Economics Program symposium, will bring together experts from Middlebury and other institutions in a series of panels that will take place in the Robert A. Jones House from noon to 6:30 p.m.

Otters football make statement versus Bullets

BRANDON — On the first play from scrimmage in Saturday’s Division III football game vs. visiting BFA-Fairfax, Otter Valley Union High School quarterback Carson Leary bobbled a snap that was a little off target, and the Otters lost six yards.

That was about all that went wrong for OV in what was a rematch of the 2014 state championship game, won by the Bullets.

My mother almost ruined me for sports.

When I was just a kid, eight or ten or so, I was listening to a Red Sox game on the radio at home, and the Red Sox unloaded on an opposing pitcher, scoring a bunch of runs, and driving the poor guy from the game.

I exulted, casting aspersions no doubt on the other team and its woeful pitcher: “Hit the showers, you bum!” I said, or some other such churlish comment.

Area runners fare well at major early invitational

ESSEX — Runners from the Middlebury and Mount Abraham union high school cross country teams submitted some promising early-season results in Saturday’s Essex Invitational, with seven Tiger boys, three Tiger girls and two Eagle girls posting top-10 finishes in Division II competition.

Overall, the Tiger boys and girls each finished second and the Eagle teams third behind Montpelier. Other D-II teams competing did not send enough runners to score.

On the boys’ side, the scores were Montpelier, 24; MUHS, 33; and Mount Abe, 82.

Otter Valley soccer wins big; other teams split

ADDISON COUNTY — In recent local high school girls’ soccer action, Otter Valley posted the most one-sided win in program history, while Middlebury, Mount Abraham and Vergennes each split a pair of games.

OTTERS

On this past Friday, the Otters thumped visiting Bellows Falls, 10-0, easily the program’s biggest scoring margin in its decade-and-a-half history, and improved to 2-1 in the process.
