Burlington bests Eagle boys' lacrosse

BURLINGTON — Undefeated host Burlington dealt the Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ lacrosse team a 12-6 setback on Tuesday.

The Division II Seahorses moved to 10-0, while the Eagles, second place in D-III, dropped to 6-2. Both of Mount Abe’s losses have come to D-II foes.

Local football players honored

CASTLETON — Local players and coaches were honored on May 1 at the annual National Football Foundation Vermont Chapter Awards Dinner on the Castleton State University campus.

Otter Valley Union High School senior Carson Leary earned the PRIDE of Vermont Award presented to the state’s premier football player. Leary was earlier named the Vermont Gatorade Player of the Year after leading OV to the Division III title, the Otters’ second-ever title and the first in a decade.

Area baseball teams come up short on the diamond

ADDISON COUNTY — The Otter Valley, Mount Abraham, Middlebury and Vergennes union high school baseball teams all dropped games on Tuesday.

OTTERS

The Otters came closest to a win, falling to host Bellows Falls, 3-2, in eight innings on a Terrier squeeze bunt. OV starting pitcher Tyler Allen tossed five hitless innings, walking four, and allowing two runs, one earned, and reliever Derek Aines allowed two hits and one unearned run in 3.1 innings.

In just my second year at Middlebury College, 1977, I visited old friend Russ Reilly in the field house. Russ was newly arrived to coach basketball at the college.

He introduced me to another new coach, a 24-year-old woman, Carson Lessels, who had come to Middlebury to lead the swimming and women’s basketball teams.

Russ coached basketball for 20 years and served as athletic director for nine more before retiring. Carson went on to coach at Middlebury for 38 years before she retired last spring.

Date set for vote on governance of Bristol-area schools

BRISTOL — Residents in the Bristol-area towns in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union will vote on whether to institute a unified union governance structure that would put all schools in the district under one school board and one budget.

The ANeSU Act 46 committee announced last Friday that it will hold a vote on a unified union school governance structure for the five-town area.

Lincoln town office moves to temporary new home

LINCOLN — “It’s like having new roommates,” said Lincoln Town Clerk Sally Ober as she looked around the town office’s snug new home-away-from-home in the Lincoln Library one day last week.

Ober, Lincoln Treasurer Lisa Truchon, Lister David Harrison and Zoning Administrator Bob Hall are tucked in, desk to desk, around the library’s Community Room for the next six months while Lincoln constructs a new town office.
