Editorial: 'Deficits? Nonsense. Tax cuts will be so great, it'll never happen.'

Posted on October 18, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

The U.S. Treasury Department announced this week that the federal deficit jumped a whopping 17 percent this past year, posting a deficit of $779 billion. That’s an increase of $113 billion over the $666 billion recorded in 2017, and it puts the deficit on pace to top $1 trillion annually before the next presidential election. Such a pronouncement used to shock Republicans out of their wits.

The Treasury’s own analysis suggest the rapid rise in the deficit has been caused by the $1.5 trillion tax cuts passed by Trump and the Republican Congress.

Editorial: A step closer to depravity

Posted on October 18, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

When President Trump first tries to cover up the blatant killing and gruesome dismemberment of a journalist critical of the Saudi government and then, when denial isn’t plausible, tries to pretend it wasn’t carried out under the orders of Saudi Arabia’s effective ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman but by rogue killers with the government, he moves America one step closer to the depravity demonstrated by the worst kind of dictatorial governments.

Ways of Seeing by Joanna Colwell: Love, and listen to, your neighbor

Posted on October 18, 2018 |
By Joanna Colwell

Colwell, Joanna ONLINE.jpg

My friend posted a photo of two men holding up a sign that read, “Love Your Neighbor. Even if they don’t: Look Like You. Think Like You. Love Like You. Pray Like You. Vote Like You.” My thoughts kept coming back to this sign. Finally I had to respond, “Even if you are voting to take away my human rights, I still gotta love you?” My friend responded to my comment that he had it on good authority, based on most of the world’s spiritual traditions, that yes, I do have to love that person.

Eric Davis: Is Turner a real threat to Zuckerman?

Letter to the editor: Hardy knows school funding

Posted on October 18, 2018 |
By Dave Silberman and Eilat Glikman

Education funding has, unfortunately, turned into one of the more contentiously political issues facing the Vermont legislature. This past year, disagreement over the issue brought us two budget vetoes and an unprecedented near shut-down of state government. Yet many of our elected officials (and even more of the candidates running for office) have a very superficial understanding of school budgets, offering tidy sound bites about “quality” or “affordability,” but very little by way of thoughtful analysis.

Letter to the editor: New idea pitched for traffic bypass

Posted on October 18, 2018 |
By David Spencer

I refer to your October 1 story of a public forum (Sept. 26) called by a traffic advisory task force. The discussion focused on three options to ease the truck traffic burden through Main Street, Vergennes. Ask Vergennes residents to consider a fourth option that would bypass Main Street.

Letter to the editor: Drivers must use added caution

Posted on October 18, 2018 |
By Laura Asermily

Distractedness and speeding are huge issues for all road users — motorists, cyclists/scooters and walkers/joggers alike. Middlebury’s Walk and Roll to School Day the first Wednesday of each month is all about practicing safe rules of the road (and sidewalks). We emphasize making good eye contact and indicating intent and direction by waving and pointing.

Letter to the editor: Hallquist is a 'fighter' and forward-thinking politician

Posted on October 18, 2018 |
By Debbie Ramsdell

I am voting for Christine Hallquist for Governor of Vermont because: she is a proven leader, which was shown through her leadership of Vermont Electric Coop in northern Vermont; she is brave, which has been shown during her transgender transition; she is smart, which has been shown by her many forward-looking proposals to lead Vermont; and she is a fighter and has fought and won harder battles than the one against Phil Scott.
