Alternative education program cut at MUHS as enrollment declines

MIDDLEBURY — Citing declining enrollment and a related need to reduce spending, Middlebury Union High School officials confirmed plans to eliminate the alternative education program at the conclusion of this academic year.

Mount Abe bond faces crucial vote

BRISTOL — Residents of Mount Abe Unified School District will try for a third time to pass a bond vote to renovate the aging middle-and-high school facility on March 6, Town Meeting Day. This third vote is much like the previous two, with some significant compromises to reflect a 20 percent drop in proposed spending on the renovation.

Guns & Schools: ACSD board urges lawmakers to act on gun control

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central School District board on Monday endorsed a resolution urging legislative leaders to pass “common-sense gun violence prevention legislation” during the 2018 legislative session, and for Gov. Phil Scott to promptly sign that legislation into law.

Brandon police take steps at OV after Fair Haven threat

FAIR HAVEN/BRANDON — A link to the school shooting threat that originated in Fair Haven last week prompted Brandon police to take action at Otter Valley Union High School. In the end, though, authorities said no one in Brandon was in immediate danger from the threat.

With an eerie echo of the Parkland, Fla., high school shooting on Feb. 14, Vermont State Police on Feb. 15 arrested 18-year-old Jack Sawyer of Poultney for allegedly making threats and plans to commit a mass shooting at Fair Haven Union High School.

FFA building leaders and stewards for the future

MIDDLEBURY — FFA is a national organization founded by a group of young farmers in 1928. To this day, Vermont’s agricultural traditions are both preserved and modernized thanks to the dedication of today’s generations of stewards of the land, livestock, production, as well as their associated research and management practices.

Formerly known as Future Farmers of America, the group is now known simply as FFA to represent the broader scope of its mission.

Bristol board nears vote on natural gas agreement

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard at its Feb. 19 meeting inched closer to signing a license agreement with Vermont Gas Systems to bring natural gas service to Bristol.

“At some point we’re going to have to say ‘yay’ or ‘nay’ on this,” said selectboard member Peter Coffey. Convinced the pipeline would attract new businesses to Bristol and increase the town’s grand list, he announced he was prepared to vote in favor of the project.

Selectboard member Michelle Perlee also said she would vote “yes.”
