Vermont Movie' portrays the complex history, society of the Green Mountain State

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County residents will have an opportunity to bask in their state’s greatness during the upcoming airing of “Freedom & Unity: The Vermont Movie,” a six-segment film that pays homage to the Green Mountain State’s compelling history of patriotism, inventiveness, independence, creativity and environmentalism.

The film represents the combined work of more than 30 Vermont filmmakers — including Addison County residents Jill Vickers and Katherine Wheatley — and showcases some local places, people and things.

Bridport Grange to host pot pie dinner on Saturday

BRIDPORT — Each year the Bridport Grange raises money to purchase dictionaries for every third grader in the Addison Central Supervisory Union. The Grange will hold a chicken pie dinner fundraiser to benefit the Words for Thirds Project on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 5-7 p.m., at the Grange hall, 3015 Route 22A.

Artists open their studios to the public this weekend

VERMONT — Leaf peepers love Vermont in autumn, traveling the state to see the brilliant show of reds, oranges and yellows shimmering in the mountains and valleys. While looking for peak foliage, however, they also can take advantage of many special events during their stay, one of which is the Vermont Fall Open Studio Weekend.

MUHS talks trash, encourages statinability

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union High School officials usually frown upon folks tossing their trash on the campus lawn.

On Tuesday they encouraged the practice — and ironically, for the future betterment of the environment.

Panther field hockey claims four victories, moves up in rankings

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College field hockey team won four recent games to improve to 7-1, 4-1 NESCAC, and move up to sixth in the NCAA Division III coaches’ poll.

On Tuesday, Middlebury scored four goals in a 13:55 span in the second half on its way to a 4-0 win over visiting No. 12 Skidmore (8-2). The Thoroughbreds saw their winning streak stopped at seven.

New Haven celebrates hyper-local food

NEW HAVEN — An unlikely duo of recent Vermont transplants is teaming up to put on a first-of-its-kind event.

Christine Snell and Maura Lester are organizing the first annual New Haven Farm and Food Festival, a celebration of all the local food producers in the town. The festival will be held Oct. 20 at Tourterelle, the restaurant on Route 7 that Snell owns with her husband, Bill.

Snell and Lester came up with the idea back in July, when discussing how many other towns in Addison County have fall events, but New Haven does not.

Two MUHS students compete in India

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union High School seniors Sophie McKeever-Parkes and Kate DaPolito took a break from classes last month to do some traveling. But it’s not like they were on vacation; they were pitting their academic skills against fellow students from 28 countries at a spot almost halfway around the world.
