Local Legion baseball team posts four victories

MIDDLEBURY — As the American Legion baseball season neared the midway point, Addison County faced a tough test, a recent stretch of five games in five days.

AC responded with four wins, while the fifth game was suspended entering the ninth inning. Addison was set to visit Montpelier on this past Tuesday and South Burlington the next day, but both games were postponed due to bad weather.

Bristol woman killed in suspected Pittsford murder

PITTSFORD — Vermont State Police are investigating the suspected murder of a Bristol woman in Pittsford during the early morning of Friday, July 5.

Vermont State Police said they received an E-911 call at around 2:28 a.m. about a possible family fight on West Creek Road in Pittsford. Troopers responded and found Kristen L. Parker, 32, of Bristol, dead inside the residence. Parker’s boyfriend, identified as Christopher Sharrow, 35, of Pittsford, was also at the residence with three young children.

Bristol man drowns in New Haven River on Fourth of July

BRISTOL — Post-parade Fourth of July festivities took a tragic turn in Bristol on Thursday afternoon. A 26-year-old Bristol man was swept away while swimming in the New Haven River between the twin bridges on Route 116 north of Bristol village.

Officials recovered the body at 10:15 a.m. on July 5. The victim was identified as Steven Orvis, 26, of Bristol.

Vermont State Police Lt. William Jenkins said a call came in to police at around 3 p.m. regarding a man who had been swept away from the Bartlett Falls swimming area in Bristol.

Lawmakers seek clarity on benefits, costs of pipeline

ADDISON COUNTY — Faced with what they say is at times “conflicting” and “incomplete” information regarding Vermont Gas Systems’ two natural gas pipelines proposed for Addison County, a group of local lawmakers is asking state officials to prepare a study on the economic and environmental costs of the projects.

Enough Rain! Past two months have made a big splash

ADDISON COUNTY — According to National Weather Service meteorologist Kimberly McMahon, the data the agency collects at the Burlington International Airport show things started getting unusual in the middle of May.

In fact, temperatures for the first six months of year remain “right around normal,” McMahon said.

So, too, did precipitation amounts for the first four-and-a-half months of 2013. In fact, if anything, there was a little less snow and rain overall.

“Toward the middle of May, we were below normal,” McMahon said.

ACTR moves into its new $4.2 million home

MIDDLEBURY — It was around 80 degrees, humid and drizzly in Middlebury on Monday, but it was just like Christmas at 297 Creek Road where the 31 full- and part-time workers at Addison County Transit Resources were opening a gift for them and the rest of the county: ACTR’s new, 12,500-square-foot headquarters.

“Over the last month, the experience has been somewhat surreal for most people here,” ACTR Director James Moulton said on Monday as he continued to unpack supplies in his new office.
