HANCOCK — The Hancock Town Pride Committee recently received a $2,500 grant from the Vermont Community Foundation’s Small and Inspiring grant program. The grant will help further the Hancock Town Pride’s mission of fostering community spirit, beautifying the town and offering events and activities by creating the Hancock town green. The green will be located on Route 100 in front of the Hancock Fire Station.
ADDISON COUNTY — The Vergennes Police Department, in joint operations with the Bristol Police Department, recently conducted undercover purchases of heroin from two women in Addison County.
Both women — Jolee A. Ladd, 39, and Carrie A. Chappell, 43, — on May 22 were subsequently arrested during the execution of a search warrant by the Vergennes, Bristol and Vermont State police and the Addison County Sheriff’s Department at their home at 1454 Fern Lake Road in Leicester.
VERGENNES — Following the Memorial Day festivities, the Vergennes Lions Club drew the winners’ tickets for their 2013 Vehicle Raffle. The winner of the grand price, a Chrysler PT Cruiser convertible, was Katherine Veysey of Addison. The second-prize winner of the Cloud Nine Fishing Charter was Audrey Tucker of Vergennes, and the third-prize winner of the stay at River’s Edge Campground was Lynette Delisle of Vergennes.
VERGENNES — After being jailed on Park Street for crimes ranging from being loud — that would be Vergennes City Manager Mel Hawley — to impersonating a mayor and allegedly misbehaving in high school — that would be city mayor Bill Benton — a number of Vergennes-area residents on Thursday tapped friends and family members for more than $3,000 to be bailed out.
Those funds were turned over to the Vergennes Rotary Club, which in turn planned to donate the cash to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Vergennes.
Burlington – From overlooked to over-matched, the Otter Valley baseball team made any skeptic still standing fall flat.
Under the bright lights of Centennial Field, the Otters rolled to a 9-0 victory over top-seeded Burr & Burton, claiming the program’s first championship since 1976.
To reach the Division II state finals, the Otters defeated No. 3 Lamoille in the semi-final match-up as Justin Owen shut down the Lancer offense through 6.2 innings en route to an 8-1 victory.
CASTLETON — In the end, nobody could stop the South Burlington High School girls’ lacrosse powerhouse this spring.
On Saturday at Castleton State College, the top-seeded Rebels capped off their 16-0 season with a 14-7 victory over No. 2 Middlebury, their third straight title-game victory over the Tigers, all at Spartan Stadium.
POULTNEY — On Friday night in Poultney, the No. 3 Vergennes Union High School softball team’s Division II title bid came up just short — as did a Commodore sixth-inning home-run bid that would have tied the game — against undefeated No. 1 BFA-Fairfax.
The Bullets improved to 19-0 with a 4-1 victory over VUHS and won their second straight D-II crown, while the Commodores finished at 15-5 for the third straight spring advancing deeper into the playoffs than the season before.
With the resignation of half of the teachers at the Monkton Central School last Thursday night, it’s fair to say the school is in crisis. What led to the massive resignations, and what the school system and the public can do about it should dominate the school community’s focus over the next several weeks.
