Program brings 1777 medicine to life

ORWELL — Few people know that the largest hospital built by Americans during the Revolutionary War was at Mount Independence in Orwell. The Mount Independence State Historic Site cranks up the time machine on Sunday, July 28, at 2 p.m. to explore the story of health and medicine during the revolution on Mount Independence with the program, “An Investigation Into the Revolutionary Mind: What Were You Thinking, Dr. Jonathan Potts?”

Guided tours offered across Lake Champlain Bridge July 28

ADDISON — The managers of the Chimney Point, Vt., and Crown Point, N.Y., state historic sites will host a guided walk on Sunday, July 28, at 1 p.m., leaving from the Crown Point State Historic Site museum. Walkers should allow at least two hours. Walk leaders Tom Hughes and Elsa Gilbertson will take participants across and back on the bridge, and will show them the 9,000 years of human history at this important and beautiful location on Lake Champlain.

Film to revist '83 Tiger hoop team

MIDDLEBURY — In 1983, the Middlebury Union High School boys’ basketball team shocked the Vermont sports world.

Despite an undefeated regular season, the Tigers were lightly regarded heading into the Division I playoffs. Almost all of their wins came against D-II teams, not against the D-I iron.

Editorial: Ilsley's growth and partnering

We read with renewed interest of the growth in use at Middlebury’s Ilsley Library as stated in a letter to the editor by library Director Kevin Unrath in today’s Addison Independent. The growth is impressive: In short, there are more articles being checked out and more people passing through the library’s doors than at any time in the recent past. Youth activities have also spiked, which is encouraging in this age of digital toys. (See his letter on Page 7.)

Former Weybridge clerk sentenced to two years in jail

WEYBRIDGE — U.S. District Court Judge Christina Reiss on Thursday, July 18, sentenced former Weybridge Town Clerk Karen Brisson to two years in prison, along with an order to pay her community and its insurance company $431,812.06 in restitution. The sentence was in response to Brisson’s guilty plea to having embezzled funds from the town’s coffers over a period of at least six years.

Legion baseball surging toward postseason

MIDDLEBURY — With the postseason looming, the Addison County American Legion baseball team is in its most daunting stretch of the season. Due to earlier postponements, AC recently began a stretch of nine games in nine days.

AC (14-2, 13-2 in Northern Division play as of Tuesday) started off on July 12 by playing at surprise playoff contender Montpelier. Powered by a dominant pitching performance from Devin Hayes, AC jumped ahead early and held on for a 2-1 victory.

Little League: Mt. Abe youth softball team wins state crown

LYNDONVILLE — The Mount Abraham 11-and-12-year-old Little League softball all-star team ran the table at this past weekend’s double-elimination state tournament in Lyndonville to earn the title of Vermont champions.

Mount Abe, the District I champion, opened the tournament by drawing a bye on Thursday, July 11, and then defeated the Essex all-stars, 11-7, on Friday. On Saturday, host Lyndonville eliminated Essex, and on Sunday, Mount Abe nailed down the crown by blanking Lyndonville, 10-0.

Basketball: Local stars help Vermont take Twin State game

ESSEX — Two local high school basketball all-stars and one who will play in these parts next winter helped the Vermont boys defeat New Hampshire, 89-84, in Saturday’s Twin State Basketball Classic pitting recent high school graduates from each state in games played at Essex High School.

The New Hampshire girls defeated Vermont, 61-59, despite the coaching work of Mount Abraham’s Connie LaRose. No local athletes played for the Green Mountain State.
