Exchange student reflects on on ‘great’ year at Mt. Abe

BRISTOL — After all the caps fly into the air at Mount Abraham Union High School this Saturday, the members of its graduating senior class will scatter to various locations in pursuit of jobs, travel or further education.

One will travel farther than most. Jan Liegmann, Mount Abe’s only exchange student this year, will be returning to his home country of Switzerland in June.

College bids farewell to its athletic ‘Bubble’

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College campus on Tuesday said goodbye to a prominent feature of its athletic complex — the Bubble.

The 40,640-square-foot air-filled structure was inflated in 2002 as a temporary home for the Panther squash courts and other athletic facilities. Workers deflated it Tuesday as work moves forward on two significant new structures in the complex.

Camp will explore all things Roman

WEYBRIDGE — Most students yearn for that final school bell to ring in June, signaling the start of summer vacation.

But for Weybridge’s Alexia Hernandez, the summer simply ushers in new opportunities for academic pursuits. This year, it’s a Latin culture and language camp that the 16-year-old will be teaching for free at Weybridge Elementary School from July 8 to 19.

Monkton board rejects natural gas pipeline agreement

MONKTON — Once again, it’s back to the drawing board for Vermont Gas Systems and the town of Monkton.

After several hours of impassioned discussion at a special meeting on Monday night, Monkton’s selectboard rejected a Memorandum of Understanding negotiated between VGS officials and Monkton Selectmen John Phillips and Stephen Pilcher by a 3-2 vote, with Phillips and Pilcher dissenting. Around 70 citizens attended the meeting.

Middlebury eyes options for replacing downtown RR bridges

MIDDLEBURY — An engineering firm within the next few weeks will recommend a “preferred” method of dealing with Middlebury’s two deteriorating downtown railroad overpasses, a project that will be selected from a list of six options ranging from doing nothing to replacing the spans with a concrete tunnel at a cost of around $17.4 million.

Bristol Elementary principal search continues

BRISTOL — Though the Bristol Elementary School board had initially hoped to announce a candidate for interim principal by May 20, that deadline has been extended by several weeks, according to Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Superintendent David Adams.

Current BES Principal Catrina DiNapoli announced last month that she would take on the role of director of curriculum and professional development at the ANeSU district office during the 2013-2014 academic year, filling in for Nancy Cornell who is taking a one-year leave of absence.

Learn about archaeology at historic Orwell site

ORWELL — Vermont historian and attorney Paul Gillies will offer a special program at the Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell on Saturday, June 8, at 2 p.m. His topic will be “Relics and Souvenirs: Lay Archaeologists and the Uncovering of Vermont.” This is the annual Robert J. Maguire lecture sponsored by the Mount Independence Coalition, the official friends group for the site.

Conley has overseen many changes in his short tenure at ACSU

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union School Board set some guarded expectations for Gail Conley when they lured him out of retirement in 2011 for what was expected to be a one-year stint as superintendent: Help the seven-town district stay the course during a tumultuous period marked by two lawsuits, a fractured administrative office and negotiations for a new teachers’ contract.

It’s safe to say Conley greatly exceeded most school board members’ expectations.
