Vermont Hard Cider sues coffee company for trademark infringement

MIDDLEBURY (AP) — A Middlebury company that makes hard cider is suing a Vermont coffee company for trademark infringement over the use of the word “woodchuck.”

Vermont Hard Cider Co. filed a complaint against Woodchuck Coffee Roasters in U.S. District Court in Rutland last week seeking an unspecified financial award and an injunction preventing further trademark infringement over the woodchuck name, a colloquial term for a hardy Vermonter.

Salisbury to unveil new soldiers memorial at veterans’ park

SALISBURY — Salisbury residents will have an extra reason to honor their local veterans this Memorial Day thanks to a successful effort by the local historical society to install a monument on town-owned land off of Maple Street.

The society, led by Barry Whitney Jr., spent the last seven years raising money to create the first designated veterans’ park for honoring all local servicemen and women who’ve served during every major conflict dating back to the Revolutionary War.

Marble Works at Otter Creek getting makeover

MIDDLEBURY — As two large pieces of earth-moving equipment began uprooting overgrown shrubbery and weeds and moving white-rock rubble into place for landscaping material, several members of the Middlebury Riverfront Committee gathered Wednesday morning to celebrate the start of a long-delayed project and talk of next steps.

Six local Memorial Day parades honor those who gave their all

ADDISON COUNTY — The last weekend in May is always a big one for anyone who likes to listen to brass bands play, wonder at the precision driving of Shriners in pint-size vehicles, and watch a procession of friends and neighbors march past holding banners and waving. This year should be no exception.

Six Addison County towns will host Memorial Day parades this weekend.

Vermont lawmakers press for Farm Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Vermont lawmakers are taking a lead in drafting a new Farm Bill in Washington. Sen. Patrick Leahy and Rep. Peter Welch, both Democrats, have pledged to make the passage of the critical agricultural bill a priority, particularly after dairy farms in the state were dealt heavy blows last year due to weather and market fluctuations.

New Haven voters correct budget, affirm ballots

NEW HAVEN — Voters in New Haven on Tuesday remedied an error in the town’s General Fund budget by approving, in Australian ballot voting, a supplemental spending increase of $218,997, which will be used to pay off owed school taxes to the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union.

There were 202 ballots cast; the supplemental budget increase passed 136-66.

Discarded pianos prepared for an encore on downtown streets

MIDDLEBURY — Yinglei Zhang has earned her well-earned artistic reputation by using a thin brush to deftly place ink and watercolor strokes on delicate rice paper.

But her latest canvas weighs in at several hundred pounds and will require some burly football players to move it from her studio when it is ready.

MUHS track and field hosts Mount Abe, Harwood

MIDDLEBURY — Despite some solid efforts on Tuesday by members of the Mount Abraham and host Middlebury Union High School track and field teams, Harwood took wins in both the boys’ and girls’ competitions in a three-way meet at the Middlebury College track.

The boys’ competition was close: The Highlanders edged the Tigers, 87.5-81.5, with Mount Abe (17) in third.

On the girls’ side, the scoring ran Harwood (92), Middlebury (52) and Mount Abe (32).
