Local fly-tier shares his experiences

It is winter (despite the lack of snow). Although a few Vermont rivers are now open year round for catch-and-release fishing, most are closed. And even those that are legally open, such as the lower sections of Lewis and Otter creeks, on most winter days are not especially productive.

Editorial: The inevitable candidate

With his 15-point spread in the New Hampshire Republican primary over second-place finisher Ron Paul, Mitt Romney’s victory there and his eight-vote squeaker in the Iowa caucuses has some media pundits bemoaning the prospect that the gala may be over after the opening dance. True, the primaries are scheduled through mid-June and Super Tuesday isn’t until March 6, when 10 primaries (including Vermont’s) put 466 delegates up for grabs. But will it matter, by then, if Mitt has become the inevitable candidate after the first four contests?

Editorial: Why postpone needed work?

Posted on January 12, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

In a letter to the editor in today’s issue, Middlebury resident Susan DeWind makes the case that now is not the time to be adding new expenses in the town budget — referring specifically to the proposed economic development fund — when the town is also considering bonding for an expanded fire department. She then throws out a worst-case scenario that might produce a hike of several cents on the tax rate.

We appreciate DeWind’s concerns but, in the interest of accuracy, several of her points need clarification, both minor and significant:

Clippings: Elections: Blather, rinse, repeat

Remember the movie “Groundhog Day”? The 1993 comedy starred Bill Murray as a curmudgeonly television weatherman who was forced to live the same day over and over. No matter what he did, every morning he woke up it was Feb. 2, Groundhog Day. His radio alarm jolted him awake each morning with the same Sonny and Cher song.

“Babe, I got you babe…”

Around the Bend: Weird weather not a Civic virtue

Posted on January 12, 2012 |
By Jessie Raymond

I have a confession: December’s unseasonably warm weather was my fault.

This summer I purchased an old, unfashionable Honda Civic that gave me no trouble (other than the mild bruising of my ego) until the first really cold morning in November, when the shifter got stuck in park.

Economic fund would mean jobs

Posted on January 12, 2012 |
By G. Kenneth Perine

This is the second opinion piece in a series discussing a proposal for Middlebury to create a fund that promotes economic development in town. G. Kenneth Perine is president and CEO of National Bank of Middlebury.

The recent New Hampshire primary has underscored that the economy is the principal concern of Americans today. And well it should be. Commercial loan demand is at all time lows as companies delay expansion and future investment, principally because sales are lackluster.
