New book by Middlebury author backs community energy sources

eCorp closes; hope for 100 jobs dashed

MIDDLEBURY — Deborah Schwarz, founder and president of eCorp English, announced Monday that she has formally closed the Middlebury business she launched early last year with considerable state aid and private investment amid promises of creating more than 100 well-paying jobs by 2013.

“I am crushed by it. It is the dashing of my personal dream,” Schwarz said of the demise of eCorp, a company she established in 2006 and then successfully marketed to state and local officials as a good fit for Middlebury.

EEE takes life of second area man

SUDBURY — Family and friends of Scott Sgorbati are remembering the friendly, charismatic community member who died of Eastern equine encephalitis on Tuesday, as state health officials in the meantime remind people to take reasonable precautions to prevent spread of the mosquito-borne disease.

Sgorbati, a 49-year-old Sudbury resident and father of two sons, was hospitalized on Aug. 14 after contracting the mosquito-borne disease, and on Tuesday he succumbed.

State readying major step in health care reform

MIDDLEBURY — By late next year, shopping for health insurance in Vermont will be like shopping for a travel package online, Vermont Department of Vermont Health Access Commissioner Mark Larson told about 20 people gathered at Middlebury’s Ilsley Library on Sept. 13.

Larson was making another stop on his statewide tour explaining the Vermont Health Benefit Exchange, which by 2014 will be the go-to place for many individuals and small businesses to buy health insurance in the state.

High school harriers compete at Burlington Invite

BURLINGTON — Middlebury Union High School junior Max Moulton finished fourth in the boys’ race at Saturday’s Burlington Invitational Cross-Country Meet to highlight the efforts of runners from MUHS, Vergennes and Mount Abraham.

Moulton’s run in 17:19.1 over the 5K course helped the Tiger boys finish eighth among 19 teams and second among the Division II teams competing with 218 points. Essex won with 63, followed by defending D-II champion Harwood (73) in second.

Middlebury students' results good as testing about to shift

MIDDLEBURY — The UD-3 school board on Tuesday got a glimpse of how the Middlebury-area student population is performing under current state and local measuring sticks — and got a preview of how students will be gauged under a new, national assessment program that will be in place come 2015.

At issue is the “Common Core State Standards (CCSS)” system that within three years will supplant Vermont’s current standardized testing for students through the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP).

Karl Lindholm: From the Panthers to the Orioles

Middlebury College senior Mike Joseph loves baseball — and now he has a shot, a long shot perhaps, to embark on a career in baseball, having signed a contract in August with the Baltimore Orioles.

As you read this, Mike is in Sarasota, training and competing for a month (15 games) in the Florida Instructional League. He’s the first Panther to join a Major League organization since the early 1950s.
