MIDDLEBURY — On the first day of the recent Youth Hunting Weekend, 11-year-old Winston Forbes and his father were in the tree stand behind their Middlebury house.
“We sat there all day,” Winston said. “It was getting late.”
Finally, around 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 3, their patience paid off.
“It came walking out,” Winston recounted. “I shot it twice and then we gutted it out. The next day, we reported it.”
VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School board will meet in the school this Tuesday at 6 p.m. to discuss its next step after the Election Day defeat of its $6.5 million bond proposal. Addison Northwest Supervisory Union voters on Nov. 6 by 2,244-1,653 rejected a bond that would have funded repairs and major upgrades to VUHS.
According to the warning for the Nov. 20 meeting, it will be a work session that will focus on efforts to craft next year’s budget and to “revise the proposed Facilities Repairs/Improvement Bond.”
BRISTOL — Tuesday marked the grand opening of two businesses sharing the same building at 22 Main St. in Bristol: The Enchanted Closet, Cathleen Forand’s resale and consignment store, and Selvage Yard, Julie Clark’s reclamation crafts, custom mending and repairs business.
BRISTOL — The general feeling among the 45 or so Bristol community members at a forum in Bristol last week was that efforts to address the apparent increase in drug-related crimes should also include residents from the neighboring towns of Lincoln, Starksboro, Monkton and New Haven, in addition to Bristol.
MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union has ordered an audit of its Weybridge school financial accounts in the wake of the resignation of Weybridge Town Clerk and Treasurer Karen Brisson, who admitted last week to having embezzled funds from the town.
Brisson additionally served as treasurer for the Weybridge school district.
PANTON — The town of Panton is leading an effort to extend the Lake Champlain Byway from Vergennes through Panton and Addison to the Lake Champlain Bridge and back to the Little City, and the other two communities have both signed on.
The Addison selectboard on Oct. 2 agreed to support the new Byway, and on Oct. 23 the Vergennes city council also came on board.
MIDDLEBURY — Aurora School in Middlebury has been awarded a $2,000 grant by the 2012 ING Unsung Heroes Awards Program to help fund a program called “Year of You.” Aurora School’s program was one of 100 programs across the country chosen to receive the grant and was the only one selected from the state of Vermont. The grant will be used to fund the program with science equipment and community-building field trips.
