Hannaford Career Center agribusiness students are raising chickens at the north campus on Exchange St. in Middlebury. The chickens were hatched in fifth grade classrooms at Mary Hogan Elementary School before moving to the HCC. They are being raised in hoop houses built by the construction class at the HCC, which are light enough to be moved daily in order to provide a fresh patch of grass every day. The chickens are now available for pre-order, and will be slaughtered and sold on July 6.
MONTPELIER — The Vermont Apportionment Board (VAB) has drafted a controversial new map that re-draws several Addison County House districts and even splits one local town — Monkton.
The new map, which will set the boundaries for House districts that will be contested in the 2012 election, must be endorsed by the Legislature before it becomes law.
MIDDLEBURY — After a year’s hiatus, the Middlebury Area Community Garden has finally found a new home at Porter Medical Center.
A shake-up last spring at Otter Creek Brewing left the garden homeless — since its founding in the spring of 2009, it had been based on the brewery’s property. It was April when the garden’s steering committee discovered that the space would be unavailable, and by then it was too late to find and prepare another location before the growing season.
MIDDLEBURY — For those who think that chickens are only good for meat and eggs, take note: the flock being raised on the north campus of the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center has spent several months as teachers, as well.
ADDISON COUNTY — While Vermont’s heavy snows and chilly spring temperatures drove many local residents into a frenzy, maple sugarmakers across the state celebrated their sweetest year in almost a century.
Vermont took the maple cake once again, leading the nation in syrup production with a whopping 1.14 million gallons in 2011, which accounts for about 40 percent of the nation’s 2.79 million gallons, according to figures released this month by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
NEW HAVEN — The Maplefields Mobil gas station on the New Haven stretch of Route 7 North will be closed for approximately one month beginning June 19, at 11 p.m. After what station manager Sherry Cram referred to as “years of abuse,” the station is shutting down to remove contaminated soil and possibly reduce toxins already found in the bedrock.
MIDDLEBURY — A Ferrisburgh man on June 14 agreed to plead guilty in Addison County District Court to a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, relating to a stabbing incident at the Basin Harbor Club on Sept. 20, 2010.
Joseph Forziati, 49, accepted a plea deal that calls for a jail term of two-and-a-half to five years, minus time served. The case had been headed for a jury trial. A jury draw had been scheduled for June 15.
MIDDLEBURY — Peter “Nerf” Neff has been a master entertainer in the Addison County area for almost four decades, as a popular DJ and as quite the personality at his other job — groundskeeper at Middlebury Union Middle School.
