MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents have been able to count on certain fall rituals throughout the years. Those have included apple picking, raking leaves, stacking wood and an annual fund-raiser for Mary Hogan Elementary School student activities.
BRISTOL — The No. 4 Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ soccer team fired on all cylinders — except maybe one — on Tuesday and dispatched visiting No. 13 Otter Valley, 4-1.
The 7-4-4 Eagles possessed the ball constantly, passed efficiently and creatively, won most 50-50 balls, parried the 4-11 Otters effectively when they mounted an attack, and earned a 52-3 advantage in shots at goal.
CORNWALL — Pat Pope thought she had retired nine years ago, at age 74, after a long career that included stints as a nurse, real estate agent, manager of the Frog Hollow Craft Center, inn operator, antique store owner and restorer of old homes.
If I had been writing the story covering Middlebury’s selectboard meeting on Tuesday night, I would have written a different beginning than the one we used on today’s front page.
It would have read like this:
“Creating ‘good jobs close to home,’ was the message a group of 25 area community leaders took to the Middlelbury selectboard in an hour-long presentation Tuesday evening, along with their unanimous endorsement to hire an economic development director to create jobs in Middlebury.
Pat McDonald, the chair of the Vermont Republican Party, could well be the Republican candidate for governor in 2012. While she has not yet declared her candidacy, many Republicans are urging McDonald to enter the race. The other Republicans who have been mentioned as gubernatorial candidates have either not shown interest in a 2012 campaign (Brian Dubie and Randy Brock), or have decided to seek re-election to their current position (Tom Salmon).
If you own a computer in this day and age, chances are you’re storing information in the cloud.
Let me rephrase: If you’ve ever shared photos on Facebook, ever sent an email using Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo, or ever transferred files using Dropbox, you have information stored on any number of third-party servers around the globe — termed “the cloud.”
The All-Blacks from host New Zealand triumphed before their adoring public last week in the Rugby World Cup, defeating France in the final. Perhaps you watched the match on national TV.
Rugby is a sport of great international scope, the national game in Wales, South Africa, and New Zealand and popular in many other countries of the world. Rugby’s following in the U.S. is growing.
I had a chance to travel to rugby-crazed New Zealand some years ago. I came home with a suitcase full of cool All-Blacks gear as gifts for kids and friends.
VERGENNES — Vergennes police cited two women in the aftermath of a late-afternoon Oct. 17 fight on North Green Street that police said was triggered by a dispute over a mutual male friend.
Police said the two women — Amanda Plankey, 21, of Bristol and Korey Koch, 22, of Vergennes — were both yelling at each other and hit each other in the face “several times” before they were separated.
