Middlebury to decide on future of M&E tax

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents will be asked to eliminate the town’s machinery and equipment (M&E) tax over six years. Economic development officials say the move would in the short-term slightly boost residential property tax rates, but in the long-term help the community recruit and retain businesses.

Despite modest layoff, Goodrich solid

VERGENNES — Although Goodrich Corp. in May laid off 11 non-technical workers from its Vergennes plant, a move a corporate executive called painful, the overall news for the largest employer in Vergennes and its parent company appears far from bleak.

Goodrich’s first-quarter corporate report for 2009, published in April, forecast a drop of just 2 or 3 percent in annual sales from 2008, from $7.1 billion to about $6.9 billion.

Pocock Rocks festival celebrates music, history (with slideshow)

BRISTOL — The air was cool, Main Street was cleared of cars and the town of Bristol was thumping with the beat of local bands this past Saturday at the first annual Pocock Rocks festival. The festival, captioned “Bristol’s Previously Pocock Street Fair,” showcased local music, food and businesses in a celebration of the town and its history.

Hancock and Granville shutter tiny schoolhouses after historic run (with slideshow)

HANCOCK — “Our school will shine tonight,” belted out students of the Hancock and Granville village schools last Wednesday night, taking the stage in the packed Hancock Town Hall to the thunderous applause of parents, teachers old and new, and alumni of the tiny village schools.

Wearing t-shirts emblazoned with pictures of both the Hancock and Granville schoolhouses, the 32 students threw themselves into their last hurrah: an end-of-year concert that held a special note of finality this year.

Porter Medical Center earns tough grade on BISHCA report card

MIDDLEBURY — Based on scores on a recent statewide hospital “report card,” Middlebury’s Porter Medical Center might appear to have a bit of studying up to do.

Hospital officials say they’re taking the scores seriously, but when it comes to painting a complete picture of just how well Porter is doing, the June report card only goes so far.

Vermont, New York make Champlain Bridge repair plans

Cornwall teen takes plunge into freestyle kayaking

CORNWALL — Six years ago, when Cornwall resident Emery Tillman was a nine-year-old at Camp Songadeewin on Lake Dunmore, she could have focused on anything from tennis to crafts.

But the camp’s kayaks proved to be the greatest lure. Before long, the New Orleans native had spent hours out on the water and mastered an essential trick of kayaking — popping back upright after rolling underwater.
