Just what is a “sport” anyway? I was reminded of that age-old question two weeks ago. I wrote my “outdoor sports column” on deep woods raking. But my editor, alertly recognizing that raking isn’t actually a sport, moved me out of the sports section into the “Clippings” section.
ADDISON COUNTY — Ultimately, each of the local high school field hockey teams dealt with some disappointment this fall despite the fine individual performances honored here in the 2009 Addison Independent Field Hockey All-Star Team.
At the same time, each also had either much of which to be proud or plenty to build on for the future, or both.
MIDDLEBURY — On Monday, the Middlebury College field hockey team received an at-large NCAA Division III tournament bid the Panthers were not sure would come after their first-round loss in the NESCAC tournament on Nov. 1.
On Wednesday, the host Panthers made the most of it with a 5-1 win over UMass-Dartmouth (15-7) in which junior Chase Delano and freshman Lauren Greer each scored twice in the first half to give Middlebury a 4-0 lead.
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College football team on Saturday won its third straight game, 37-14, over visiting Hamilton 37-14. It was the Panthers’ 15th win in their last 17 attempts on Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium. The Middlebury defense held Hamilton to just 202 yards — 2.8 per play — on the day, racking up seven sacks and 15 tackles for lost yardage in the process.
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury women’s soccer team saw its hopes of a third NESCAC championship fall just short this past weekend, but the 12-3-2 Panthers earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III tournament and will host a four-team regional playoff this weekend.
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team on Sunday dropped a 2-1 overtime heartbreaker to Williams at Wesleyan in the NESCAC playoff final, denying the Panthers the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
Despite the Panthers’ late-season surge to 10-5-2, including ending the regular season with a win over Williams and then posting tournament victories over No. 3 Amherst and No. 1 Wesleyan, Middlebury did not receive an at-large bid to the NCAA dance. Wesleyan (11-1-4), Amherst (11-3-1) and Bowdoin (11-4-1) joined Williams (14-2-1) in the tourney.
MEDFORD, Mass. — The Middlebury College women’s volleyball team saw its season come to and end with a 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 17-25, 25-21, 15-13) loss to Amherst in the NESCAC playoff quarterfinals at Tufts on Nov. 6. The Panthers finished the season with a 20-6 record.
Amherst controlled the first set, taking a lead that grew to 20-10. Middlebury fought back to 21-16, but Amherst finished off a 25-19 victory.
College to host senior star game
MIDDLEBURY — The annual Vermont North-South All-Star Football game for high school seniors will be played Saturday, Nov. 21, at Middlebury College’s Youngman Stadium with a noon kickoff.
The game has become a November tradition since making its debut in 2001 and serves as an unofficial tryout for the annual Vermont-New Hampshire Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl, which will be played next August. The series is tied at four wins apiece.
