Quincy Dunn-Baker gaining success as actor in New York City

April 19, 2007

By JOHN FLOWERS

MIDDLEBURY — Less than seven short years ago, Quincy Dunn-Baker left Middlebury with little more than a diploma from the Addison Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) program and a dream to someday make it big as an actor.

It now appears that “someday” is fast approaching.

Dunn-Baker, 24, is celebrating a very successful April during which he earned guest starring roles in the television crime dramas CSI: New York and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. The icing on the cake came last week when he learned he will hit the stage this summer in a production of Romeo and Juliet as part of the prestigious “Shakespeare in the Park” performance series in New York’s Central Park.

Otter Valley fire leaves damage and questions

April 16, 2007

By CYRUS LEVESQUE

BRANDON — As Otter Valley Union High School cleans up after a fire last Wednesday that was set in a first-floor girl’s bathroom, a lot of work remains to determine both how the fire started and how the school will fix the damage.

At about 12:50 p.m. on April 11, a fire began in the bathroom near the gym, and smoke spread through the ventilation system to the second-floor bathroom directly above it. The school was quickly evacuated and no one was hurt.

The Brandon and Pittsford fire departments both responded to the alarm. According to OVUHS board Chair Jim Rademacher, the damage would have been much worse if the response had taken even just two or three minutes longer. “Most of the original building would have been gone,” he said.

ID-4 budget passes; low voter turnout

April 16, 2007

By JOHN FLOWERS

MIDDLEBURY — A few dozen Middlebury residents turned out on April 11 to unanimously support all the money items on their ID-4 school district annual meeting warning, including a 2007-2008 Mary Hogan Elementary School spending plan of $5,482,885.

Mary Hogan Elementary Principal Bonnie Bourne said the meeting drew around 25 people, who endorsed all items on the warning by voice vote.

The school budget adopted by voters represented a 2.73 percent increase over the current year’s spending plan of $5,337,045.

Step it up for global warming

April 12, 2007

By MEGAN JAMES

MIDDLEBURY — When Lincoln resident Stacey Lee-Dobek saw “An Inconvenient Truth,” the film about Al Gore’s fight against climate change, for the first time last December, she knew it was time to take action against global warming.

“I stood up and said out loud to myself, ‘I have to do something more than changing my light bulbs,’” she said. “It became a New Year’s Resolution.”

So Lee-Dobek sat down at her computer to begin researching the issue, and before she knew it, she’d found Step It Up, Ripton environmentalist Bill McKibben’s nation-wide virtual demonstration to send the U.S. government a singular message on Saturday, April 14: “Step it up, Congress! Cut carbon emissions 80 percent by 2050.”

Hungry mind; full ears

April 12, 2007

By JOHN FLOWERS

MIDDLEBURY — For years, Michele Fay has felt like a musician without a stage. The guitarist and her group — aptly named the Michele Fay Band — have spent several years as real-life troubadours, zigzagging the region to get to their many gigs.

There are some local watering holes that feature live music, along with other distractions, and a few venues that feature music, though not as often as most would like. Fay has always wanted a regular, local place to park her instrument and showcase the music, and she knows other Addison County musicians feel the same way.

“As a Vermont musician, I have … discovered that it’s very hard to find venues — especially places that aren’t crowded bars or noisy restaurants,” she said. “It’s hard to find a good ‘listening room.’”

Mary Hogan budget to face vote

April 9, 2007

By JOHN FLOWERS

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters weighing in on the proposed 2007-2008 ID-4 school budget on Wednesday, April 11, will also be asked if they want to affirm their current practice of electing their moderator, clerk, treasurer and an auditor from the floor, as opposed to by Australian ballot.

The special vote, set for 7 p.m. at Mary Hogan Elementary School, comes in the wake of some recent research by Addison Central Supervisory Union Superintendent Lee Sease into the ID-4 charter. He discovered that the charter — which dates back to 1866 — stipulates that district officers must be elected by Australian ballot. But the district had unwittingly been selecting its officers in the same manner as most other districts — from the floor of the annual meeting, a process endorsed by state law.

Trouble is, school charters are supposed to trump state law when it comes to procedural matters.

Steve Flint comes to New Haven post

April 9, 2007

By CYRUS LEVESQUE

NEW HAVEN — A school with 450 students in grades K-8 may not be that big a school by some standards, but it has been too big for Steve Flint. The former Addison Central School teacher took up the position as assistant principal of Manchester Elementary/Middle School in southern Vermont last fall but he has found that he misses the ability to get to know the students and faculty that comes with a smaller school.

“There’s a feel that comes with a small school that’s really important to me,” Flint said.

So when he heard that Beeman Elementary School in New Haven was looking for a principal, he jumped at the chance. Flint, 33, will take over for Carol Barnes, who in January announced her retirement at the end of the school year. The Beeman Elementary School board chose Flint for the job on March 29.
