BRANDON — Velma B. Thornton, 88, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at her home surrounded by her loving family after a brief illness. Her family says she lived a life of strong faith that never wavered.
She was born on Oct. 13, 1924, in St. Albans, the daughter of Henry and Winnifred (Church) Bruley. She grew up in St. Albans where she graduated from St. Albans High School, class of 1941. She married S. Ray Thornton in St. Mary’s Church in St. Albans on Aug. 30, 1952.
WEST ADDISON — Lloyd Hewitt Raymond, 93, of West Addison died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, at Birchwood Terrace Nursing Home in Burlington.
He was born July 6, 1919, in Springfield, the son of Dennis Harold Raymond and Mary Viola Hewitt.
MONKTON — Nadine (Shattuck) Hanson, 83, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at Mary Bingham’s Home in Bristol with her loving family by her side.
She was born July 10, 1929, in Burlington, the daughter of Fay and Maude (Wright) Shattuck.
BRISTOL — Gena Elizabeth Prime, 87, died Tuesday Dec. 4, 2012, at Helen Porter Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury.
She was born July 9, 1925, in Bristol, the daughter of Arthur and Alice Shepard Prime.
She retired from Uni Royal Manufacturing in Bristol, Conn. She volunteered at several nursing homes in the surrounding area in Connecticut during her retirement years. Her family says she enjoyed driving her red sports car.
VERGENNES — Gregory S. Clark, 65, passed away Friday, November 30, 2012, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.
He was born July 19, 1947, in Burlington, the son of Allen and Shirley (Haven) Clark.
He was a teacher at Mt. Abraham Union High School and served five terms in the Vermont Legislature. Also, he was a member of the Vergennes Congregational Church, Dorchester Lodge #1 F&AM in Vergennes, and Addison County Eagles Club in Vergennes.
MIDDLEBURY — Kevin C. Hurley, 50, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington, after a short illness.
Born in Indianapolis, Ind., Jan. 14, 1962, he was the son of Patricia Shilleh (Blamey) and the late Curtis Hurley. Kevin was the eldest of four children and was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. He graduated from St. Xavier High School and then attended Johns Hopkins University where he received his BA in international relations. He went on to earn his MA from Lancaster University, England.
MIDDLEBURY — Belle Nagel died peacefully on Dec. 1, 2012, in Middlebury at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Chip and Jack Mayer. She was 93 years old.
Belle was born May 2, 1919, in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. She was the fourth of five children. Her singing talent was apparent early on. At the age of 6 she was chosen to sing popular songs of the era on “The Children’s Hour” on WMBQ radio.
ORWELL — Steven Michael Sabourin, 60, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, following a long illness, at his home in Orwell.
He was born in Middlebury on Aug. 20, 1952. He was the son of Edward and Joyce (Jennings) Sabourin. He was a graduate of Otter Valley Union High School, class of 1970, where he played baseball for three years and was southpaw pitcher.
