Teresa M. Hunt

BRISTOL /MURPHY, N.C. — Teresa M. Hunt, 92, of Murphy, N.C., died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008. She was the daughter of Lewis C. and Florence Graham Smith.

A native of Cheever, N.Y., she lived in Bristol before moving to Murphy in 1994.

She was a nurse aide at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla., for 18 years, retiring in 1986.

She was of the Methodist faith.

She is survived by two daughters, Charlotte Hunt of Murphy, N.C., and Betty Wissel and her husband, Emery, of Lincoln; one son, Paul G. Hunt and his wife, Bonnie, of Murphy; 16 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Edwin Hunt, who died in 1991; and a son, Harold E. Kilburn.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31, at Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven.

Richard Howard Marcher

TUCSON, Ariz. — Richard Howard Marcher, 97, formerly of Middlebury, died Sept. 9, 2008, in Tucson, Ariz., the home of a godson, Daniel Cavett.

He served as a pilot officer in the United States Army Reserves War Training Service during World War II, where he flew B29s over the North Pole to the Soviet Union on photo-reconnaissance missions. A crash in an L-19 in the Carolinas brought his military career to a halt. Employed by Boeing Aircraft, he later became a regional sales representative for several nationally known companies.

He and his wife, Alice, moved to Vermont in the 1960s, built a house in Ferrisburgh, and eventually moved to Middlebury. There he reclaimed an early interest in art and resumed painting. A member of the Middlebury Artists Association, his works were prolific. He is probably best remembered for his series of townscapes, county barns and inns.

According to family, he was a free spirit and jack of all trades for whom the glass was always half full.

Mary L. Bolduc

BRIDPORT — Mary L. Bolduc, 81, died Thursday evening, Sept. 18, 2008, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

She was born Sept. 3, 1927, in Weybridge, the daughter of the late Archie and Maude (LaPan) LaBrake.

Mary married Dennis Bolduc Aug. 7, 1948, and they just recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

She was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church of Bridport and a former member of the Altar Society for many years.

Mary loved to knit, crochet, garden and spend time with family and friends.

Survivors include her husband Dennis, of Bridport; her daughter, Diane B. O’Bryan and her companion, Clyde LeMay, of Wilder; her two grandchildren, Kelli A. O’Bryan of San Diego, Calif, and Chris P. O’Bryan of Goffstown, N.H.; and also by several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents and also by her brother, Francis LaBrake, who died January 1984.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Sanderson-Ducharme Funeral Home at 117 South Main St. in Middlebury.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, at 11 a.m. at St. Genevieve’s Catholic Church in Shoreham. The Rev William R. Beaudin will be the celebrant.

Burial will follow in St. Genevieve’s Cemetery in Shoreham.

Betsy (MacMillan) Saunders

MIDDLEBURY — Betsy (MacMillan) Saunders, 90, of Middlebury, died at Helen Porter Nursing Home on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, after a lengthy illness, surrounded by her family.

She was born Betsy Ann MacMillan, Feb. 2, 1918, in Rochester, N.Y., the daughter of Donald J. and Suzanne M. MacMillan and the youngest of six children. After graduation from James Madison High School in Rochester she worked as a hematology technician at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. There her work contributed to the Manhattan Project. While working in the lab she met her future husband, Richard H. Saunders, Jr., and on May 19, 1944, they were married.

In 1950 she moved to Burlington, Vt., where she raised two children while her husband served as a professor of medicine at the University of Vermont. In later years she lived in Rochester, N.Y.; Bronxville, N.Y.; Gladwyne, Pa.; and Grafton, Mass.. Upon her husband’s retirement in 1989 she moved to Middlebury where she lived until 2001. From 2001-2006 she and her husband were residents of the Willows in Westborough, Mass., before returning to Middlebury.

In her married life she developed a particular love for travel, gardening, and numerous crafts, including rug hooking, quilting, and tole painting. She was also an active volunteer during her adult life, particularly for the Unitarian Church, Grafton, Mass., and Round Robin and the American Red Cross, Middlebury. But above all she was a loving mother and wife. Nothing brought her greater joy than family and she took special pride in a marriage of almost 65 years and frequent visits from children and grandchildren.

She was particularly proud of her Scottish heritage and in 1977 traveled to the family cottage of her forbears in Macrihanish, Argyleshire, Scotland.

Jeremy Adam Sturtevant

BRISTOL — Jeremy Adam Sturtevant, newborn son of Jeff and Allison Sturtevant of Bristol, died Sept. 7, 2008, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

He was survived by his parents, a brother, Jacob Alan; a sister, Abigail Rita; maternal grandparents Rita and Peter Hutchinson of West Virginia and Daniel Salisbury of Colorado; paternal grandparents Madeline Sturtevant of New Haven and Roger Sturtevant of New Haven; maternal great-grandmothers Eva Bromley of Wisconsin and Eunice Wordelman of Minnesota; paternal great-grandmother, Marion Gosselin of Shoreham; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Saturday, Sept. 13, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Bristol. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Bristol. Donations may be made to Bristol Rescue Squad Inc., P.O. Box 227, Bristol, VT 05443.

Clifton Chester Smith

BRANDON — Clifton Chester Smith, 88, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, at Helen Porter Health and Rehabilitation in Middlebury. He was born in East Middlebury Nov. 13, 1918, the son of George and Priscilla (Stone) Smith.

He received his early education in West Rutland schools. On August 16, 1941, he was married to Marguerite Douglas in Brandon.

In his early years he worked at Western Union in Brandon and also delivered milk for Mr. Horton and Mike Belden. He worked at C.V.P.S. as a station operator at the Silver Lake and Weybridge stations. He retired in 1982.

After his retirement he and his wife spent summers volunteering for the Green Mountain National Forest as hosts at Silver Lake and also taking care of other areas such as the Robert Frost Picnic Area and Texas Falls for over 16 years. Clifton was a founding member and early president of the Marble City Riders and was a member of St. Paul’s Masonic Lodge 25.

Joyce J. Carter

BRISTOL — Joyce J. Carter, 63, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2008, at her home in Bristol after a brief battle with cancer.  She was born May 13, 1945, in Ferrisburgh, the daughter of John and Ruth (Newville) Jerome.

Family reports that she was a private person, strong-willed, always ready with advice, a listening ear and help.

She is survived by her husband, Terry Carter of Bristol; two children, Anita Carter and Andrew Carter of Bristol; two grandchildren; three sisters, Alice Prime, Evelyn Carter, and Joan Stevens; four brothers John, Charles, Norbert and William; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son Brian and Kevin.

 Funeral services were held on Thursday, Sept. 11, at Brown McClay Funeral Home in Bristol. Interment was in Mt. St. Joseph Cemetery in Bristol.

Richard L. Keenan

FERRISBURGH — Richard L. Keenan, a Wellesley, Mass., resident for 50 years, and most recently at North Hill in Needham, Mass., and Ferrisburgh, Vt., died at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt. on Sept. 1, 2008, at age 85.

Predeceased by his loving wife Barbara (Clarke) Keenan, they married on June 11, 1945, in San Antonio, Texas, where he was a surgical technician in the U.S. Army. Barbara, his wife of 58 years, was “my greatest supporter,” said Dick. “Whatever good occurred to me, she was responsible.”

He is survived by children Clarke Keenan, and his wife, Cathie, of Westwood, Mass., Jonathan Keenan, and his wife, Kathleen, of Monument Beach, Mass., and Bonnie Jane Conway of Export, Pa.; and loving granddaughters, Adrienne and Katie.

Both Dick and Barbara were graduates of Waltham High School in Waltham, Mass. Dick graduated from Norwich University in 1947 and became employed by Waltham Chemical Company, which he purchased in 1963, retiring in 1994.

In addition to his expanding pest control business, he found time to pursue other related interests. He held manager positions with his trade association, the National Pest Control Association. Also, he was elected to the board of Copesan Services Inc. Milwaukee, Wisc., and served as its president for four years. In 1980, he inaugurated CPS Insurance Company Ltd., Hamilton, Bermuda, and was its president for 16 years. CPS insures over 20 percent of the pest control industry in the United States.

In 1981 he was elected a trustee of Norwich University, Northfield, Vt., and served for 21 years. He was vice chairman of the board for the last six years of his tenure. He served with three university presidents.

Guy E. Seager

RUTLAND — Guy E. Seager, 96, passed away Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at the Meadows at Heritage Hill in Rutland.

Guy was born in Richford, N.Y., Oct. 19, 1911, the son of Scott E. and Melissa (Williams) Seager. He was the second-oldest child out of four children, and grew up on his father’s farm in Randolph, Vt. He graduated from Randolph High School where he met his future wife, Francis Lamson, who he married on Jan. 26, 1936.

He attended Rutland Business College and went to college in Flint, Mich., to study car dealership management. After his graduation he returned to Rutland and worked for his uncle, who owned the Rutland Buick Company.

He worked at the dealership for another 20 years until he took over the dealership and remained the owner for another 30 years. He had resided in Rutland for over 50 years and was very active in community affairs and was a member of the Shiners and Past Master of Rutland Masonic Lodge No. 79.

After his retirement, he and his wife lived in Florida and South Carolina before moving back to Brandon in 1993. During his retirement he was an avid golfer, and shuffleboard and bridge player.

Guy was always known for his wonderful wit and sometimes dry sense of humor.

Guy is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and her husband Franklin C. Sanderson Jr. of Brandon; and his four grandchildren, Franklin Sanderson III of Castleton, Bill G. Sanderson of Leicester, John H. Sanderson of Orwell and Susan L. Sanderson of Hubbardton. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his wife, Frances Seager, who passed away Aug. 28, 2004; his son Stuart E. Seager on June 2, 1995; his granddaughter Sharon Lea Sanderson–Cerasoli on July 25, 1990; one sister Pam Baker; and two brothers, Scott and Alton Seager.
