Tristan Sarad Dakshin Quinn

WHITING  — Tristan Sarad Dakshin Quinn, age 17, passed away Saturday, July 26, 2008. He was born in Madros, India, Jan. 24, 1991, and came to the United States on March 21, 1992.

Tristan grew up in Whiting and attended Whiting Elementary School and had completed his junior year at Otter Valley Union High School. Tristan was an avid soccer player throughout high school; he also enjoyed snowboarding, snowmobiling and his music. His real passion was his ATV and racing. Outside of school and sports he worked part time at McDonalds in Middlebury.

Tristan’s friendliness was infectious. He was known for his enormous circle of friends, which included family, classmates and the countless people who were fortunate to have known him.

Tristan is survived by his parents, Steve E. and Ann T. (McCormick) Quinn of Whiting; his brother, Cian P. Quinn of Whiting; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He is also survived by his grandparents, Guy and Bev Rosenquist of Killington and Surfside Beach, S.C.

He is predeceased by his grandparents, Donald F. McCormick and Bernice (Layden) McCormick; and his grandfather, Francis Quinn.

The Mass of Christian Burial celebrating his life was held on Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Brandon. The celebrant was the Rev. Albert “Skip” Baltz. Graveside committal services and burial followed in Pine Hill Cemetery, Brandon. A reception for family and friends followed the committal service at the family’s home in Whiting.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Whiting First Response, Whiting Fire Dept., Shoreham First Response or the Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller and Ketcham Funeral Home, Brandon.

Frederick M. Peyser Jr.

MONKTON — Frederick M. Peyser Jr., 82, died unexpectedly on July 21, 2008, at his home in Monkton. He was born Oct. 25, 1925, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Frederick Maurice Peyser and Catherine McKelvey Peyser. He also had a home in Vero Beach, Fla.

As a young man growing up in New York City he attended Friends Seminary and Xavier Military School and graduated from Great Neck High School in 1944.

 He served with distinction in the 100th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army, where he received a battlefield commission as a second lieutenant in World War II, making him the youngest officer in the European Theater at that time. His service was recognized with a bronze star and he was the recipient of a purple heart.

Following the war, he attended Williams College where he graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts cum laude.

 As partner in the firm of Hallgarten & Co., he headed the London, Brussels and Geneva offices.

He later became managing partner of the entire firm. He was also CEO of Gruen and Co., a Swiss watch manufacturer, as well as River Processing Inc., and established his own financial consulting firm, Peyser Corporation. He served on the board of directors of The Dorsey Corporation, University Patents and Pargas,among others.

 After raising his family in Oyster Bay, N.Y., he retired to the family’s home, Beaverdam Farms, in Monkton, where he enjoyed spending time in nature and sought to protect the natural environment of Vermont through advocacy and philanthropy.

Following retirement, he was actively involved in local Vermont organizations and activities, most notably leading charges against the expansion of high voltage power lines and a gas pipeline in the Champlain Valley. In Florida, he actively supported the arts and Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission in Fellsmere.

Sarrah Anne Ogilvie

BRISTOL — Sarrah Anne Ogilvie, 30, died unexpectedly on Saturday, July 12, 2008, at her home in Bristol. She was born in Middlebury April 1, 1978, the daughter of Patricia (Lilly) Ogilvie and the late James “Scott” Ogilvie.

She was a scholar throughout her life, with a quick wit and uncanny sense of humor. She played the clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone and piano. She also sang with the Addison County Youth Chorus.

According to family, she was a loyal sister, daughter, aunt and friend and a fiercely devoted mother to her two young children, five-year-old Andrew and three-year-old Bethany.

She was a long-time employee of PaPa Nick’s Restaurant in Hinesburg.

 She is survived by two children, Andrew and Bethany; the father of her children, Eric Bresnick, and his two children, Dylan and Taylor; her mother, Patricia Ogilvie; her sister, Heather, and husband, Aaron; two nieces; a nephew; her grandmother, Margaret Schake of Bellingham, Minn.; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

 Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown McClay Funeral Home in Bristol. Services will be held on Friday, July 18, at 11 a.m. at Assembly of God Christian Center on Route 7 in Vergennes. A reception will follow at the church.

Irene P. Mignault

VERGENNES — Irene P. Mignault, 90, died Friday, July 11, 2008, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury.  She was born March 11, 1918, in Newport, N.H., the daughter of Louis and Mary Ano Terrian.

 She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Vergennes.

WEYBRIDGE — A memorial service for Arlene Johnson-Delliveneri of Weybridge, who died last December, will be held at the Weybridge Congregational Church at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 21, 2008. Donations may be made to one’s favorite  charity in her name.

Renia Partridge

BRISTOL — Memorial services for Renia Partridge, who died May 6, 2008, will be held at St. Ambrose Church in Bristol on Saturday, July 12, 2008, at 5:15 p.m.

Howard McCoy Munford

MIDDLEBURY — Howard McCoy Munford, Middlebury College professor emeritus of American Literature, died at his home in Middlebury on June 30, two weeks shy of his 96th birthday. A 1934 graduate of Middlebury, he joined the faculty in 1941, having received his M.A. from the Breadloaf School of English and later a Ph.D. from Harvard.

He retired from Middlebury College in 1977 after 35 years of teaching. His academic career was interrupted by service as a Navy air combat intelligence officer in World War II aboard a CVE aircraft carrier in the Pacific.

Born in Des Moines, Iowa, on July 13, 1912, Howard grew up in Springfield, Mass., where he attended public school. In 1934, after graduating from Middlebury, he married Marion Roberts Jones, Middlebury class of ’32, in Mead Chapel. He then went on to teach English and American Literature from 1934 to 1938 at the Clark School in Hanover, N.H.

His academic career was enriched by an appointment at Stanford University in 1952 to study the interrelationship of science and literature; in 1954 he was a Fulbright lecturer in Finland; he joined John Berryman in 1957 on a United States Information Service tour of India; he was part of a 1958 State Department delegation of American professors visiting the Soviet Union; from 1963-1964 he lectured as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Freiburg, Germany.

Robert Lawrence Mack Sr.

SHELBURNE/GREEN VALLEY, Ariz. — Robert Lawrence Mack Sr., 81, died on Saturday, June 28, 2008, at his home in Shelburne following several years of failing health, with his devoted family at his side. He was born on the family farm in Charlotte, July 18,1926, the son of Ralph and Mary (Goodrich) Mack.

He attended Charlotte schools and Burlington High School. On Aug. 1, 1953, he married Mary Pollard in St. Catherine of Siena Church in Shelburne.

He owned and operated a dairy farm in Charlotte with his family for numerous years. He was a member of the Farm Bureau. Following retirement he and his wife moved to Shelburne and Green Valley, Ariz., where they spent their winters with new friends and neighbors.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Shelburne; and their eight children; Robert Mack Jr., Robin and David Mack, and Hilary, all of Charlotte; Susan Jipner and husband, Jay, of Bristol; Mary Gentes and husband, Vilas, of Essex Junction; Steven and Laura Mack of Charlotte; James Mack and Elizabeth Mack, both of Shelburne; and Kathleen Riggs and husband, Timothy, of Hinesburg.

Thirteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his sister, Helena Spear of Charlotte; and nieces and nephews also survive him.

He was predeceased by his brother, Richard Mack, a sister, Elizabeth Leahy; and two grandchildren, Melissa and Trevor Mack.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, July 2, in St. Catherine of Siena Church in Shelburne with interment in the family lot in Shelburne Village Cemetery.

Bonita Marie “Bonnie” Petty

RIPTON/AUSTIN, Texas — Bonita Marie “Bonnie” Petty, 61, died Saturday, June 21, 2008, at North Austin Medical Center in Austin, Texas. She was born in Middlebury on March 20, 1947, the daughter of Wendell and Roseann (Douville) Orvis.

She grew up in Melvin Bridge, N.Y., and attended New Lebanon (N.Y.) schools. She graduated from Shoreham High School in 1965. She afterwards attended Castleton State College and received her teaching degree from Johnson State College. In earlier years she taught at Weybridge Elementary School.

She moved to Austin, Texas, in the early 1980s, where she worked in property management for several years. She married her husband in Austin on Dec. 30, 1985. She had been working as a programs specialist for the state of Texas since 1989. She enjoyed flea markets, reading, and arts and crafts.

She is survived by her husband, James Petty of Austin, Texas; a step-son, Adam Petty of Austin, Texas; a step-daughter, Katrina Smart of Burnet, Texas; a brother, Peter Orvis of Ripton; two step-grandsons; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral service was held on Thursday, June 26, in Austin, Texas. A private graveside committal service and burial took place on Sunday, June 29, in Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandon. The Rev. Lee Ferry, interim rector at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Brandon, officiated.
