Raymond A. Whitman
MIDDLEBURY — Raymond A. Whitman, 83, died Monday, March 31, 2008, at Helen Porter Nursing Home surrounded by his family. He was born in Middlebury on December 17, 1924, the son of Archie and Nellie Whitman.
He grew up in Addison County attending local schools, and played football, basketball and baseball. He was inducted into the U.S. Army June 28, 1943, serving his country in France, Germany and Austria. He served in Patton’s Third Army, Battery C, 128th Anti-aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion.
After returning from World War II, he worked for F.A. Tucker, Charles Mraz, the Railway Express Agency and as a postman in Middlebury for many years until his retirement. According to family, he loved spending time with his family, enjoyed gardening, hunting and sugaring.
He is survived by his wife, Jean, of 58 years; a daughter, Lynn; three sons, Gary and his wife Donna, Robin and his wife Debbie, and Scott and his wife Lisa; three grandchildren; two brothers, William Whitman and his wife, Viola, of Mendon, and Charles Whitman of Middlebury; two sisters, Lucille Barrows of Vergennes, and Ruth Conway and her husband, Robert, of Rutland; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy, of Rutland, and a brother, Richard, of Tupper Lake, N.Y.
A memorial service will be held at the Valley Bible Church in East Middlebury on Thursday, April 3, at 5 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association, and the Valley Bible Church in East Middlebury.
