Margaret M. Sanchez

MIDDLEBURY — Margaret M. Sanchez, 40, of Middlebury died at Porter Hospital unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 15, 2008. She was born Oct. 6, 1967, in Daly City, Calif., the daughter of Jose Sanchez of Redwood City, Calif, and the late Elinor Sanchez of Middlebury.

After graduating from MUHS she earned degrees from both Randolph Macon Women’s College and George Mason University in Virginia. She taught elementary school in Virginia, Maine and Vermont.

She worked with several literacy programs with the schools and Ilsley Library. She also volunteered at the Ronald MacDonald house in Burlington. She was employed at Otter Creek Bakery.  According to family she enjoyed making all kinds of international cuisines and sharing them with her friends and neighbors.

She is survived by her children Mallory Pipich, Madelyn, Meilena and Marshall Sanchez, all of Middlebury; her sister and brother-in-law, Monica Sanchez Webb and Stephen Webb; a brother, Stephen Sanchez of Warren; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A celebration of her life was held Sunday, April 20, at the Universal Unitarian Church in Middlebury. A memorial mass will be held at a later date at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Middlebury. Interment will be in St. Paul’s Catholic Cemetery, Orwell.

 Memorial donations can be made to The Sanchez Children Fund and sent to the attention of Barbara Bourne at Mary Hogan Elementary, Middlebury VT 05733.


Roger Donald Beattie

BRANDON — Roger Donald Beattie, 74, died Friday, April 18, 2008, at the home of his care provider, Eileen McGee, in Brandon. He was born in South Londonderry on Sept. 1, 1933, the son of Raymond and Zoe (Gates) Beattie.

Margaret M. Sanchez

MIDDLEBURY — Margaret M. Sanchez, 40, of Middlebury died at Porter Hospital unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 15, 2008. She was born Oct. 6, 1967, in Daly City, Calif., daughter of the Jose Sanchez of Redwood City, Calif., and the late Elinor Sanchez of Middlebury.

Those who knew here said she was very loved and immersed into her community — her passion was literacy. She worked with several literacy programs with the schools and llsley Library. She also volunteered at the Ronald MacDonald house in Burlington. Her second passion was food and cooking. She told friends that she enjoyed her current employment with Otter Creek Bakery and making all kinds of international cuisines and sharing them with her friends and neighbors.

She is survived by her children Mallory Pipich, Madelyn, Meilena and Marshall Sanchez all of Middlebury; her sister and brother-in-law, Monica Sanchez Webb and Stephen Webb; and a brother, Stephen Sanchez of Warren; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

George E. “Westy” West Jr.

SHOREHAM — George E. “Westy” West Jr., 83, died on April 5, 2008. He was born on July 29, 1924, in Milton, Mass., the son of George E. and Constance (Youngquist) West.

He attended Quincy schools, advancing to Tufts College, where he was enrolled in the ROTC program. He served in the Korean War as an ensign in the U.S. Navy, retiring as lieutenant commander. While at Tufts he met and married Shirley “Cookie” Heitman, a student of Jackson College and native of Shoreham.

They initially lived in Schenectady N.Y., then settled in Abington, Mass., to raise their children. He worked as a mechanical engineer at Stone and Webster in Boston, then at MIT. His became director of physical plant of Tufts University in Medford, Mass., and at Northfield Mount Herman School in Northfield, Mass.

They retired in 1991 to Shoreham, and spent their winters in Venice, Fla. According to family, his perfect day would include sailing on Quincy Bay or Lake Champlain, tending to his vegetable garden, solving a challenging problem and reciting United States history anecdotes to his captive family audience.

During his retirement, he was an active Masonic Lodge member, on the solid waste management committee, was a lister for the local assessor’s office and was a member of the Shoreham Congregational Church.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years; two daughters, Kathryn and her husband, John Ciovacco, of Schenectady, N.Y., Janis and her husband, Paul Donlan, of Abington, Mass.; a son, Steven and his wife Irene; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Joycelynn Nelson of Nokomis, Fla, Helene Meehl of Abington, Mass., and Carol Marcello and her husband, Dr. David Marcello, of Marion, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.

Lynne H. Porter

MIDDLEBURY — Lynne H. Porter, 52, died April 2, 2008, after over a year of fighting malignant melanoma.

She was the former executive director of Care Net Pregnancy Center in Middlebury and mother of seven.

According to family, she will be remembered by her warm smile, giving nature and her passion and talent for cooking. She invited Middlebury College students who didn’t have a place to celebrate the holidays over for meals. During the Christmas period, she would bake her infamous rum cakes with her secret recipe.

She was a member of the Bridport Congregational Church. Her children report that she loved to take them to attend François Clemmons’ concerts. She also participated in the Middlebury College Community Choir with her daughter, Esther.

She is survived by her mother, Mary Schantz of Tucson, Ariz.; her father, Henry Porter of Bend, Ore.; her sister, Lisa Barner of Stuart, Fla.; her brothers, Jay and George Porter of Jackson, Mich.; and her children, Jason Porter of Stuart, Fla.; David Porter, Esther Wolf, Daniel Wolf, Alex Wolf, Arianna Porter, and Aaron Porter.

A memorial service was held on Sunday, April 5, 2008, at the Shoreham Congregational Church. The Rev. Tim Franklin, pastor of the Bridport Congregational Church, officiated. Private burial will be in the East Shoreham Cemetery at a later date.

Raymond A. Whitman

MIDDLEBURY — Raymond A. Whitman, 83, died Monday, March 31, 2008, at Helen Porter Nursing Home surrounded by his family. He was born in Middlebury on December 17, 1924, the son of Archie and Nellie Whitman.

He grew up in Addison County attending local schools, and played football, basketball and baseball. He was inducted into the U.S. Army June 28, 1943, serving his country in France, Germany and Austria. He served in Patton’s Third Army, Battery C, 128th Anti-aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion.

After returning from World War II, he worked for F.A. Tucker, Charles Mraz, the Railway Express Agency and as a postman in Middlebury for many years until his retirement. According to family, he loved spending time with his family, enjoyed gardening, hunting and sugaring.

He is survived by his wife, Jean, of 58 years; a daughter, Lynn; three sons, Gary and his wife Donna, Robin and his wife Debbie, and Scott and his wife Lisa; three grandchildren; two brothers, William Whitman and his wife, Viola, of Mendon, and Charles Whitman of Middlebury; two sisters, Lucille Barrows of Vergennes, and Ruth Conway and her husband, Robert, of Rutland; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy, of Rutland, and a brother, Richard, of Tupper Lake, N.Y.

A memorial service will be held at the Valley Bible Church in East Middlebury on Thursday, April 3, at 5 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association, and the Valley Bible Church in East Middlebury.
