Robert E. Pechie
ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Robert E. Pechie, 75, of Minnesott Beach, N.C., passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, due to a blood clot from an earlier surgery, at Northside Hospital in Alpharetta, Ga.
He was born in Queens Village, N.Y., on April 3, 1933, the son of the late Anna Thrasher Pechie and Theodore Pechie. He was also predeceased by a brother Ted Pechie of Lincoln, Vt.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Evelyn Pechie, originally from Islip Long Island, N.Y.; four children, James DeMilt and wife Lisa of Lincoln; Rene Pechie-Bougor and husband Michael of Middlebury; Sherraine Pechie and Steve Hartman of Alpharetta and Robert Pechie Jr. and wife Karen of Newport, N.C.; four grandchildren, Jeremy Bougor, Amanda DeMilt and Kati and Kelli Kayhart, all of Vermont; also, a brother Joseph Pechie and wife Nancy of Luray, Va.; sister-in-law Gail Thorpe-Guy of New Bern, N.C., along with many nieces and nephews; his two beloved Miniature Schnauzers, Meeka and Schnapps; and many special friends.
As a young man he served overseas for the U. S. Army. He met his wife in Long Island and married in Hauppauge, N.Y. A few years later they moved to Vermont to raise their family and he built custom homes. He also enjoyed dairy farming on Shaker Mountain in Starksboro, Vt. They moved to North Carolina in 1982 where he was an engineering technician at the facility maintenance department at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in Havelock, N.C., retiring in 1996.
In the summers he and his wife and dogs would travel to Salisbury to enjoy the sunsets at their home he built on Lake Dunmore. He loved spending time with family, working with his hands creating beautiful clocks, birds, rocking chairs and many other crafts. There was always a new project just around the corner. He also enjoyed landscaping and golfing with family and friends. No matter the task he was always there with a helping hand.
