Emergency responders still working hard

ADDISON COUNTY — On Aug. 28, while many watched Tropical Storm Irene rushing in on TV, radio or computer, local officials were battling the storm to keep roads open and information streaming.

But as news of the disaster falls from national and local headlines, many of those local officials are still working hard, attending to recovery efforts and evaluating the emergency response procedures carried out in the immediate aftermath of the storm.

County growers edge toward close of wet season

ADDISON COUNTY — As frost rolls in over the Champlain Valley, farmers and home gardeners in the county are beginning to take stock of what has been, for many, a disappointing growing season.

“It’s been very, very, very wet,” said Bill Scott, president of the Addison County Farm Bureau.

In fact, as of Sept. 30, preliminary precipitation totals from the National Weather Service this year add up to 44.2 inches in Burlington, making 2011 already the fifth wettest year on record.

Lincoln digs in river for materials to repair roads

LINCOLN — Lincoln officials removed rocks from the New Haven River last week without state authorization in order to get materials to shore up roads undermined by flooding after Tropical Storm Irene.

Town officials said they had been trying to get a hold of state officials for four weeks without success, and they moved ahead with the work so that necessary repairs could be finished before snow flies.

Bridport man sentenced in accidental shooting case

MIDDLEBURY — A Bridport man on Monday accepted a plea deal from the county prosecutor that calls for him to perform 80 hours of community service and pay almost $14,000 in medical expenses incurred by a man he accidentally shot while target practicing at his Bridport home more than a year ago.

College fourth in national solar contest

MIDDLEBURY — Members of the Middlebury College Solar Decathlon team spent two years designing, constructing and presenting their 1,000-square-foot, solar-powered, super energy efficient house in preparation for the U.S. Department of Energy’s international competition.

More tenants, shoppers sparking optimism in Vergennes

VERGENNES — Challenges remain for the vitality of the Vergennes economy, said several downtown merchants and board members of the Vergennes Partnership, but there are reasons for at least cautious optimism.

A number of empty downtown spaces are now being filled, some after long periods of vacancy, and shopkeepers said after a summer of weather-related setbacks business seems to be picking up.

City police investigate death of robbery suspect

VERGENNES — The investigation into the death of a 34-year-old John Graham Shelter resident during a Sept. 28 armed robbery should be complete no later than by the end of next week, said Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel.

Yemalla Sprauve, 34, died of undetermined causes after allegedly assaulting a male clerk at the Champlain Farms convenience store shortly after 4 a.m. on the 28th.

Vermont Gas project can tap rate revenues

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Public Service Board (PSB) has given Vermont Gas Systems (VGS) permission to use some of its ratepayer revenue to help bankroll a planned expansion of the utility’s gas pipeline into Addison County by 2015.
