CASTLETON — For most of Monday’s Division II field hockey semifinal, No. 2 Otter Valley Union High School looked like the better team even without leading scorer Allison Lowell, who took ill just as the Otters were boarding their bus to leave for Castleton State College.
THETFORD — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ cross-country team finished fifth in Division II to highlight the efforts of runners from MUHS, Mount Abraham, Vergennes and Otter Valley at Saturday’s Vermont championship meet at Thetford Academy.
VERMONT — The Vermont Sports Media Association chose Middlebury Union High School football player Austin Robinson and Wallingford swimmer Bethany Bosch as its September Athletes of the Month.
In statewide balloting of VSMA members, Robinson was elected the Male Athlete of the Month, and Bosch was voted the Female Athlete of the Month. Each was first nominated by a VSMA member for his or her outstanding efforts during the month of September.
“You can always tell tourists apart from Alaskans,” Brad said. Brad is my nephew, and a Middlebury College alumnus. Just about the time he started as a freshman at Middlebury, his parents moved to Anchorage. When he graduated four and a half years ago, he stuck around New England for a while looking for work, but eventually joined his parents back in Anchorage.
ADDISON COUNTY — All three area high school football teams will play in semifinal games this weekend. Middlebury (9-0), the top seed in Division I, and Otter Valley (7-1), the No. 1 seed in Division III, will host contests; Mount Abraham (5-4), No. 6 in Division III, will hit the road.
The D-I and D-III finals will be held at Rutland High School on Saturday, Nov. 8, at times to be announced early next week.
TIGERS VS. LAKERS
HARTFORD, Conn. — The Middlebury College football team on Saturday snapped Trinity’s 53-game home winning streak with a 27-20 victory. It was the Bantams’ first home setback since Sept. 29, 2001, and their first loss of 2014 as they dropped to 5-1.
The Panthers improved to 4-2 as quarterback Matt Milano tossed four touchdown passes, three to Matthew Minno. They will visit Hamilton this Saturday before closing out their season by hosting Tufts on Nov. 8 at 12:30 p.m.
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team clinched a home quarterfinal game this Saturday by defeating visiting Wesleyan this past Saturday, 3-1.
The Panthers (8-3-3, 5-2-3 NESCAC) will host a Saturday game. The time and opponent will be determined by the outcome of Wednesday games played after the deadline for this edition of the Independent.
