Gregorgy Dennis: Advice for newlyweds

Posted on June 30, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

There once was a time in life when everyone was getting married. Then there were a few, inevitable divorces.

Now it’s time for everyone’s kids to get married.

This year for me is full of those weddings — the 20- and 30-somethings launching into full adulthood by tying the knot. Two weddings of that kind this month alone — one in Mt. Hood, Ore., and the other last weekend in the Berkshires. Another one coming up this fall.

Opinion: Charbonneau, Sheldon are touted

Posted on June 30, 2016 |
By Ellen Oxfeld

On August 9, I plan to support Jill Charbonneau and Amy Sheldon in the Democratic primary for Vermont House in Middlebury. Jill Charbonneau is running for her first term. Jill, who has been enthusiastically endorsed by Senator Bernie Sanders, will be a strong advocate for Vermont workers, as well as for moving forward on the goal of health care as a public good for all Vermonters and making higher education more affordable.

Opinion: Minter's higher ed plan is praised

Posted on June 30, 2016 |
By Dave Sharpe

As the chair of the House Education Committee, I have long been disturbed that nearly all Vermonters graduate high school, but only about half continue their education beyond high school.

This trend spells disaster: By 2020, two-thirds of jobs in Vermont will require some post-secondary education. We are setting ourselves up for a situation in which many young Vermonters will only be qualified for low-wage jobs.

Ways of Seeing: A new awareness of Angels

Posted on June 30, 2016 |
By Cheryl Mitchell

As I grow older, my mind sometimes goes places faster than my typing fingers can keep up or ideas get conflated with one another when I am trying to express them. Concepts that at one time seemed “too far out there” are starting to seem possible as I am learning to see things in different ways.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Michael T. Livingston, 55, of Middlebury for driving under the influence (third offense), following a traffic stop on Court Street Extension on June 26.

Vergennes Police Log: Phone scam reported to police

Posted on June 30, 2016 |
By Addison Independent

VERGENNES — After last week receiving another report of an attempted phone scam, Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel is urging area residents never to send money or reveal personal information to callers claiming to represent a contest or the Internal Revenue Service.

Instead, Merkel said, residents who receive calls like the one a city resident reported on June 22 should call police. In that instance, a resident was contacted and told she had won $5,000, but had to mail $2,000 to the Philippines to cover taxes before she could receive her winnings.
