School petition seeks change on micro level in macro world

Posted on September 24, 2009 |
By Angelo Lynn

A petition circulating throughout the UD-3 school district is imploring the Middlebury Union High School administration, board and teachers to “adopt a culture of excellence mandated at the highest administrative levels.” The petition has been greeted with enthusiasm by the board and administration, though early responses suggest that restricted finances will hamper how much can be done to effect changes on test scores that petitioners say are too low.
Certainly, current test scores validate the need for change.

Biking in Addison County will lead you to beautiful fall colors

ADDISON COUNTY — During September, when the autumn cool begins to creep around the edges of the late summer warmth, you can be sure that somewhere in the mountains the leaves have already begun to change. As the color crawls down into the valley, what better way to get out and see it than on a bike?

“It’s a relaxing, slow-paced way to enjoy the foliage,” said Caroline Jalbert, the administrative assistant and leader operations coordinator at Vermont Bike Touring, based in Bristol. “And there’s good riding for every level.”

Table Talk: A blog about everything from cooking food to eating it, by Andrea Suozzo

I’m going to take a wild guess and say that I’m not the only one who gets nervous about food prices. Sometimes I’ll stand in the middle of an aisle for several minutes, debating whether or not to buy the better-quality olive oil for two dollars more – that’s two dollars that I could be spending on rent, gas or my school loans instead of on food, which is fleeting and temporary.

Middlebury Trailrunner: Almost like running up Worth Mountain

After all these years of living in the area, I realized that I had never run up to the top of the Middlebury College Snow Bowl, so it seemed like a fun thing to do on a perfect Sunday afternoon. Starting in the Snow Bowl parking lot, I headed up the dirt road just to the left of the ski patrol cabin. I figured, correctly, that this would ascend on the Voter trail, which was after all the easiest way to ski down from the summit, and should make for an easy climb. Note to self: those bunny trails which are so easy in the winter, can be very steep from the runner’s perspective!

MIDDLEBURY —Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater (THT) last week was once again hosting a sizable audience.

But those assembled in THT’s sumptuous performance hall on Thursday were not taking in a play; they were learning about how to help returning soldiers and their families deal with the real-life drama of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other war-inflicted mental health issues.

MIDDLEBURY — Having become so used to paring school budgets in recent years, UD-3 school board members got some unexpectedly good financial news last week with word that the district had ended fiscal year 2009 in the black to the tune of $512,189.

The Addison Central Supervisory Union (ACSU) Superintendent Lee Sease said the fund balance can be traced to two sources.

VERGENNES — When Vermont Commissioner of Education Armando Vilaseca visits Vergennes this week, he will discuss two issues the Vermont Board of Education has identified as critical — one in which local officials said Vergennes Union High School is already a statewide leader and another in which by March Vergennes-area schools may lead Vermont.
