Clippings: Son inspires father to go the distance

Posted on June 10, 2010 |
By John Flowers

I always thought I’d be able to tell folks exactly where I was when I decided to run my first long-distance race. You know, one of those sobering, psych-yourself-up moments you never forget.

Turned out to be quite the anti-climax, really. We were riding in the car around four months ago when our son, Mark, blurted out, “Dad, we’re running the half-marathon in Burlington this May.”

Oh.

“Thanks for signing me up, son,” I believe I muttered under my breath. “Did you put me down for the firing squad, too?”

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association (MVAA) has spent the past 40 years delivering critical medical services to ailing county residents.

Now the MVAA is hoping the community will help it deliver on a new, state-of-the-art emergency response headquarters that is nearing completion on land just north of Porter Medical Center off South Street.

Politically Thinking: Rare statewide race shaping up

Posted on June 10, 2010 |
By Eric L. Davis

The 2010 Vermont election cycle will feature competitive races for many statewide offices, including secretary of state. After 12 years as secretary of state, Deb Markowitz is stepping down to run for governor. In recent years, several secretaries of state have gone on to become candidates for higher offices, including Markowitz, Jim Douglas (secretary of state from 1980 to 1992), and, for those with longer memories, Jim Guest (secretary of state from 1976 to 1980).

Campus wall to become canvas

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College students have long commented on the empty back wall of the Wright Memorial Theater, a 58-by-53-foot white space facing a parking lot off of Shannon Street.

But if the efforts of recent graduate Kate Lupo pay off, the wall will soon get a makeover in the form of an environmentally-themed mural — a reproduction of a set of 16 prints by Vermont artist and Middlebury College alumna Sabra Field, called ‘Cosmic Geometry.’

Between the Lines: Late spring brings a quieter time

Posted on June 10, 2010 |
By Gregory Dennis

Even amid the rumbling of road construction in downtown Middlebury, you can hear the sound of their absence. The sound that isn’t a sound.

It’s the time of year when for just a couple quiet weeks, Middlebury gets fully handed back to the people who live here. The decibel level drops by double digits, the pace slows to that of a true small town, and suddenly all the faces you see are familiar ones.

Perfect, but not perfect: Pair of calls are blown

Posted on June 10, 2010 |
By Karl Lindholm

Last Wednesday night we were assembled in front of the tube watching the end of the Red Sox game, as we do most nights. It’s an after-dinner nocturnal ritual.

The Sox announcers informed us that Armando Galarraga of the Tigers was taking a perfect game into the ninth inning against the Cleveland Indians. Twenty-four Indians’ hitters had come up and all 24 had been set down. So we changed the channel to see if the young Tiger pitcher could close it out.

Good sports. Exciting.
