ACSD board votes to back progresssive curriculum

SHOREHAM — The educational sea change in Middlebury-area schools continued on Tuesday night in Shoreham, where the Addison Central School District (ACSD) board unanimously approved what will be a three-year effort to adopt the International Baccalaureate program within all nine of the district’s schools.

Warming shelters to open on October 15

MIDDLEBURY — The thermometers are currently telling us it’s almost 75 degrees outdoors, but that won’t last long.

The folks at the Charter House Coalition know fall weather in Vermont can take a nose-dive in a matter of hours, so the nonprofit group will be opening its shelters for both families and individuals on Oct. 15.

Engineering students build replicas of historic local watercraft

MIDDLEBURY — This fall, professional boatbuilder Douglas Brooks of Vergennes helped teach students in the Engineering Design class at the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center in Middlebury learn about and build traditional Lake Champlain boats. This was the third year of the program, which was carried out in partnership with the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History.

Brandon OKs Des Marais wetland restoration plan

BRANDON — A floodplain restoration project has been approved by the Brandon Development Review Board, with conditions designed to address flooding concerns by abutting landowners.

The DRB issued its decision on Sept. 23, two months after the initial hearing on the application by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and property owners Jim and Lyn Des Marais. Since then, the board has conducted a site visit, then re-opened and closed the hearing on Sept. 24.

State OKs conservative Porter budget with 0.7 percent spending increase

MIDDLEBURY — The Green Mountain Care Board (GMCB) has approved Porter Medical Center’s proposed fiscal year 2017 budget of $76,094,920, which represents a 0.7-percent increase compared to last year’s spending plan and places the organization on a more solid financial path following a few years of financial turmoil.

Middlebury to clarify private water lines

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials are vowing to identify and notify area residents served by private water mains in light of a recent case involving four property owners on Munson Road.

The town selectboard on Sept. 27 agreed to fix a break in what they state is a private water main serving those four Munson Road residences, but selectboard members will bill the affected property owners for the work, estimated at around $5,000.

The Magic Flute opera set for THT stage
