Homeless man found dead not far from Middlebury shelter

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police believe alcohol played a significant role in the tragic death of a local homeless man found on the town green during the early morning of Saturday, Jan. 13.

Police identified the deceased as 45-year-old Suad Teocanin.

Middlebury Police Sgt. Michael Christopher said Teocanin had been living in the Middlebury area in recent years, working kitchen jobs at various restaurants. At the time of his death, he had been working at downtown Middlebury’s Two Brothers Tavern.

Nighttime fire destroys home on Butternut Ridge in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — A late night fire Saturday at a home in the Butternut Ridge neighborhood off Route 116 in Middlebury drove a family out into single-digit temperatures, sent two people to the hospital and apparently claimed the life a family pet.

The Middlebury Fire Department received a report of a fire at 200 Butternut Ridge Drive, the home of the Randall family, at a little after 11 p.m. on Jan. 13.

Carol's coffee shop owner hopeful business can survive bridge construction

MIDDLEBURY — On the heels of a email sent to supporters and patrons explaining the precariousness of his current cash flow at Carol’s Hungry Mind Café in downtown Middlebury, owner John Melanson sounded hopeful in an interview Wednesday afternoon that he would be able to keep “the wolves at bay.”

Gas pipeline forum to be held in Leicester Saturday

LEICESTER — Now that Vermont Gas Systems has finished work on its Addison Natural Gas Systems pipeline from Colchester to Middlebury, some people are anticipating the possibility of VGS turning its attention to extending its pipeline south toward Rutland.

As such, the public is invited to a Landowner Forum at the Leicester Meeting House on Saturday, Jan. 20, starting at 2 p.m. 

The Leicester Meeting House is the brick building located at Leicester Four Corners — the intersection of Route 7, Leicester-Whiting Road and Fern Lake Road.

Jessie Raymond: Cozy winter meal fails to satisfy

When I made soup on a recent frigid Sunday, I wasn’t just making dinner. I was turning the kitchen into a beckoning space of warmth and flavor, a treat for all the senses, to fend off the bitterly cold weather.

I take my food pretty seriously.

I started by setting a cast iron Dutch oven on the top of our wood cook stove. I could have used the Kenmore range, but I maintain that nothing combats winter like a hearty meal simmering over a wood fire, even if people do call me Ma Ingalls behind my back.

Assault alleged in Salisbury

SALISBURY — A Salisbury man on Tuesday pleaded innocent in Addison Superior Court’s criminal division to four charges — including an alleged felony aggravated domestic assault — in connection with an incident at a Colorado Circle home during the early evening of Jan. 11.

The allegations against John Foshea, 48, also include felony unlawful restraint, felony unlawful mischief and misdemeanor interference with access to emergency services.

After weird weather, city sewage over ow among state’s largest

VERGENNES — Weather extremes late last week — heavy rains, warm temperatures that melted existing snow, and then a hard freeze — triggered overflows to municipal sewer systems around Vermont, notably in Vergennes, St. Albans and Rutland.

All plant operators are required to report combined sewer system overflows to the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). That’s because the overflows are mostly storm water after weather events such as those last week, but also contain septic waste.

ESSEX JUNCTION — The 2018 Vermont Farm Show will be staged at the Champlain Valley Expo in Essex Junction on Jan. 30-Feb. 1.
