Farm Bureau: Meet the candidates

VERGENNES — The Addison County Farm Bureau will host a candidate’s reception from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 8, at St. Peter’s Parish Hall in Vergennes. This is an opportunity for voters to meet the candidates running for office and help make the decision as to who to vote for in November.

All local and state candidates have been invited to attend. Coffee, cider, and Cabot Cheese with be available.

Ferrisburgh considers new insurance coverage

FERRISBURGH — At their Sept. 18 meeting, members of the Ferrisburgh selectboard discussed a potential site for a town-owned solar array (see story on Page 17).

In other business on Sept. 18, the Ferrisburgh selectboard:

•  Agreed to pursue a quote from Travelers Insurance, through the Williston Insurance Agency, for all the town’s insurance coverage. Agency representatives said other towns, including Burlington and Milton, have saved money by switching to Travelers from PACIF, which is affiliated with the Vermont League of Cities and Towns.

Get rid of toxic firefighting foam

MONTPELIER — For decades, firefighters had been using a certain type of foam to fight fires. While this foam helped save lives, state regulators recently discovered per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in Type B Aqueous Film Forming Foam, known as AFFF.

See a bird-banding demonstration at Dead Creek

ADDISON — Bird lovers are invited to join the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department at the Dead Creek Visitor Center in Addison to learn more about bird banding and conservation.

The department is partnering with Otter Creek Audubon to host Bird Banding Week with hands-on bird banding demonstrations. Members of the public will help identify the birds, observe the banding process, and can even help release the birds after they are banded. Licensed bird bander Rodney Olsen of Vergennes will lead all banding sessions.

Grants offered for sustainable farming

VERMONT — The Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) Program is seeking applications for its 2019 Farmer Grants.

Proposals are due online by Nov. 27 at 11:59 p.m. Funded projects will be announced in late February 2019, and projects may begin in the spring.

Middlebury Classic Film Club spotlights fall films

The Middlebury Community Classic Film Club is back in action this fall with another film series. After a summer hiatus, the club will once again meet in the Community Room of the Ilsley Library in Middlebury to bring people together each month to enjoy wonderful movies, great conversation, some pretty good chocolate chip cookies, coffee and popcorn. The first of the four films screens on Sept. 27 with the theme “Immigration and Migration.”

Flashback to the '60s: Mellow Yellow and Heavy Light play THT

Vermont-based sixties tribute band Mellow Yellow is marking their 10th anniversary with a new stage show called “Sixties Flashback” at the Town Hall Theater on Friday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. The show will feature songs from the heyday of the late 1960s rock and pop music. This will be the first of several shows in collaboration with Heavy Light, a team that creates live projection psychedelic light shows.

The band has produced theatrical shows over the past several years, relying on digital technology to get that “sixties sound.”

John Funkhouser's quartet of 'Brothers' to play Brandon

BRANDON — The John Funkhouser Quartet returns to Brandon Music on Saturday, Sept. 29 for its annual concert in the barn. The performance will feature songs on the group’s fifth CD, “Brothers” — the band’s first CD in five years. In typical Funkhouser form, the album is eclectic, with influences from South Africa, the Great American Songbook, Appalachia, India, New Orleans, ’70s prog rock, modern jazz and more.
