Eric Davis: State Dems eyeing veto-proof edge

Posted on July 26, 2018 |
By Eric Davis

Davis, Eric May 2018.jpg

The most consequential elections in Vermont in November could well involve 10 to 15 House seats around the state, which will determine whether Gov. Scott can have vetoes sustained by the Legislature in 2019 and 2020.

Scott is likely to be re-elected. No incumbent governor of Vermont has lost a re-election bid in 56 years. None of the Democratic candidates for governor has the political and electoral experience, fund-raising ability or name recognition to pose a serious challenge to Scott.

A unique community of 10,000-15,000 Vermonters is scattered throughout our state. Its vibrant culture centers around its engaging language. However, this community is often marginalized, misunderstood and forgotten. Its young people can be particularly isolated. Deaf Vermonters, whose contributions help support our state, would benefit from greater acknowledgment and allocation of resources.

Letter to the editor: Medical experts reacted quickly

Posted on July 26, 2018 |
By Kathleen G. Johnson

This morning I woke up to learn on the internet that a prescription medicine I had been taking for years — valsartan hctz — had been recalled overnight nationwide. I spoke to my pharmacist at Marble Works as soon as they opened, then to my primary care office (Addison Family Medicine) and by mid-afternoon I had my new prescription in hand. And a refund for a recent renewal from the pharmacy for the now banned medicine.

Letter to the editor: Sheriff candidate has experience

Posted on July 26, 2018 |
By Bill Cunningham

I strongly endorse Peter Newton as the next sheriff of Addison County. Peter currently serves as a lieutenant in the sheriff’s department under the mentorship of Sheriff Keeler. Peter has spent 28 years in public safety, 13 of which were in the emergency medical field, and the last 15 dedicated to law enforcement.

Letter to the editor: We rob children of precious time

Posted on July 26, 2018 |
By Julie Parker

When I look out over the rolling blue hills and distant skyline it is hard to feel anything is amiss in Vermont. Yet Gov. Shumlin was one of the first to admit that this small state has a serious opiate crisis. Something is amiss. And Vermont has company in 49 sister states. Here is my take on what may be contributing factors.

Our children have been fleeced. We have stolen all their presents, and along with this burglary the fun they could have had playing, exploring, dreaming with them, even squandering them, tiring of them, then throwing them away.

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. — Between July 11 and 18 the 11-and-12-year-old Marble Valley All-Star Baseball Team finished second in a major tournament in Glens Falls, N.Y. The Marble Valley team, which includes many players from Brandon and southern Addison County, won three times before falling to a Saratoga team in the final.

Marble Valley opened with an 8-5 victory over Ticonderoga, N.Y., and followed that up with another win over Hudson Falls, N.Y. (which had also defeated Ticonderoga), this time by a score of 10-0.

MUHS soccer stars shine for Vermont

Posted on July 26, 2018 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

CASTLETON — Two former Middlebury Union High School soccer standouts performed well on Saturday in the annual Twin State Lions Cup Matches, played this year on the campus of Castleton University.

Tiger goalie Santiago Fernandez played for the Vermont boys in the day’s second game, which finished in a 1-1 tie with all-stars from New Hampshire. Fernandez backstopped Vermont in a scoreless first half and made several saves, a couple of which were tough ones, according to Tom Haley of the Rutland Herald.
