Locals seek to recognize Stan Lazarus with a park

MIDDLEBURY — Turn back the clock a half century.

Downtown Middlebury was a bustling retail hub. Just about every local family went to the Lazarus Department Store at 22-26 Main St. (pictured below) to outfit themselves and their kids with sturdy clothing and shoes.

Omnipresent store owner Stanton Lazarus brought a combination of business acumen and compassion to his running of the business that bore his family name. His philanthropy became legendary, though he tried to keep it low-key.

Suspicious fire strikes Cornwall; biggest blaze chief has ever seen

CORNWALL — Crews from six Addison County fire departments were dispatched to put out a massive blaze in Cornwall last Friday evening that Cornwall Fire Chief Denny Rheaume called the biggest fire he has seen in all of his 25 years with the department.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire, which started under suspicious circumstances.

Vergennes manager Hawley bid adieu amid praise, laughs, memories

VERGENNES — Just retiring City Manager Mel Hawley’s longevity in his position has been remarkable, said Vergennes Mayor Renny Perry at a Tuesday evening gathering honoring Hawley in the Vergennes Opera House.

 Perry should know. He worked as one of two city managers in Vergennes when Hawley left for 10 years, between 1998 and 2008, to work for Country Home Products, and Perry has also served as a city manager and mayor in New Hampshire.

Panton votes to alter town meeting date, voting rules

PANTON — At a special meeting held on Monday evening, Panton residents voted almost unanimously to approve three measures that town officers hope will improve voter participation when the town makes annual decisions each March.

The roughly 60 voters who attended the meeting voted yes on a measure to move Panton’s annual meeting from its traditional time, the morning of the first Tuesday in March, to the evening of the first Monday of that month.

Bristol film series to celebrate women directors

BRISTOL — In the middle of her acceptance speech at the 90th Academy Awards ceremony last March, a giddy, breathless Frances McDormand put her Best Actress Oscar on the floor and asked all the female award nominees to stand with her. Led by actress Meryl Streep, they did, and Hollywood’s Dolby Theater erupted with applause.

The moment was less striking as a gesture of solidarity, however, than as a visual of how literally few and far between those women were — lone figures standing amid vast seas of the seated.
