Drug investigation draws police cars to Middlebury address

MIDDLEBURY — Multiple Vermont State Police vehicles converged upon a Court Street home on Friday, July 6, in what VSP Lt. Jeff Donaski described as an “investigation into possible drug activity.”

Three separate witnesses told the Independent they saw at least three state police cruisers and possibly two more police cars parked in a residential driveway a few properties north of the intersection of Charles Street and Route 7.

Massage therapist faces new allegations

MIDDLEBURY — A former Middlebury massage therapist has pleaded innocent to an additional 30 misdemeanor charges of voyeurism and one count of possessing child pornography in connection with an ongoing investigation of his alleged use of video equipment to record women clients in various states of undress at Rogers Relaxing Massage Therapy LLC, formerly located at 31 Court St.

Historic model train display open during Festival on-the-Green in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — As an infant, Roy Sokolowski could hear the train whistles of the Long Island Railroad from his parents’ apartment. From the age of three, he shared a small Lionel Train Set with his grandfather. As he got older, Sokolowski and his family would often take vacations by car to Pennsylvania — the Poconos, Lancaster. On occasion, they would squeeze in a train-related destination like the stop at the East Broad Top Railroad in Orbisonia, Pa.

“The seed was planted,” Sokolowski said of his interest in all-things railroad.

Farmers: It's hot for the cows, too

ADDISON COUNTY — The record-breaking heat wave that hung over Vermont last week may have mostly broken, but local farmers say its effects could be felt for weeks more.

Pete James, the farm manager at Monument Farms in Weybridge, said his cows are reacting just like any hot human being would.

Gary Starr: Avian artistry born and bred

In the Duxbury, Mass., home where Gary Starr grew up, avian artistry was a household affair. His father, George R. Starr, a doctor, lined the walls of Gary’s childhood abode with hundreds of intricately-carved decoy ducks, geese, loons and sandpipers that he had both collected and crafted himself. While his father’s appreciation for waterfowl stemmed from the practice of hunting itself, the beauty of the carved wooden decoys hunters used to lure their prey was what really grabbed young Gary.

Retiring OV teacher Michael Dywer earned much respect in 30 years

BRANDON — In front of the wall of windows in Room A1 at Otter Valley Union High School, a large black plastic trash can was filling up as the school year came to a close last month.

OV English and History Teacher Michael Dwyer had been going through the file cabinets and book shelves for a week, throwing out and sorting 30 years of accumulated materials as he prepared to retire.

Mexican farmworker remains in custody

ADDISON COUNTY — A local farmworker from Mexico remains in custody after his arrest on Sunday, June 24, by agents from Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Alejandro Hernández Ventura, a 25-year-old employee at an Addison County dairy farm, is being held at a detention center in Strafford County, N.H.

“We’ve been in constant contact with him,” said Enrique Mesa, an immigration lawyer in Manchester, N.H., who is representing Hernández Ventura. “He’s very frustrated and very scared.”
