MIDDLEBURY — After 15 months on the job, Addison County State’s Attorney Dennis Wygmans is seeking a new four-year mandate from area voters. Barring an eleventh-hour write-in campaign by another candidate, Wygmans will run unopposed in his first election for the position.

Bristol police chief search hits snag

BRISTOL — The Bristol Police District will not get a new police chief by July 1, as had been hoped.

The Bristol selectboard was slated to conduct June 25 public interviews of the final two candidates, whose names are being withheld.

That plan was scrapped, however, after the five-member Police Chief Review Committee (PCRC) raised a number of concerns at the June 11 selectboard meeting.

Middlebury to celebrate judge in anti-slavery case

Four candidates eye Brandon-Pittsford seats

BRANDON — The race for the Brandon, Pittsford and Sudbury House Seat is heating up with four candidates vying for the two available spots — and three of the four are newcomers.

The district has two House seats in the Legislature. The open seat is the result of Democratic Rep. Steve Carr’s decision this spring not to run for re-election in November. The other seat is held by Republican Rep. Butch Shaw of Pittsford, who has announced he is running for re-election.

Peonies are one of the most beautiful and venerated garden plants. With their massive blooms in shades of red, pink and white and yellow they are the queens of the June garden. And best of all, given fertile soil, good air circulation and adequate sunlight, peonies are not only easy to grow but they are also extremely long-lived.

MONTPELIER — Gov. Phil Scott Thursday evening struck down a spending package that would have ensured government funding beyond the end of the month, just hours after his campaign called Democratic and Progressive leaders “extremist” for stoking fear among Vermonters about a government shutdown.

Middlebury Sears store set to close on July 23

MIDDLEBURY — The Sears Hometown Store at 383 Exchange St. in Middlebury will close for good on July 23 after an almost 10-year run.

Efforts to reach owner Ed Gregory were unsuccessful as the Addison Independent went to press on Friday. A worker who answered the store phone Friday morning said he could not discuss the reason why the store was closing.
