Vergennes Police Log: City police investigate robbery

VERGENNES — In addition to beginning the investigation that led to the arrest of the suspect in the May 1 armed robbery of Small City Market and two southern Vermont businesses (click here to see story), Vergennes police between April 30 and May 6 handled a variety of incidents, including processing a drunk-driving case, helping people who were reported to be feeling suicidal, and dealing with alleged threatening behavior.

Eagles only winners in high school softball

ADDISON COUNTY — Mount Abraham picked up three wins, two at Vergennes’ expense, to highlight local high school softball earlier this week. In other action Middlebury and Otter Valley dropped games.

On Monday the Eagles swept a doubleheader from the Commodores, 22-4 and 23-6, both in five innings.

Tiger boys' lax outlasts Lakers

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ lacrosse team did enough on Tuesday to get past visiting Colchester, bolting to an early five-goal lead and putting it on cruise control to come away with a 10-7 victory over the Lakers.

The Tigers improved to 5-2 heading into more challenging home games, one against undefeated Champlain Valley that was played on Wednesday after the deadline for this issue, and another against 6-1 Essex on Friday.

In high school lax, OV boys tip Eagles; Tiger girls edged out

ADDISON COUNTY — In high school lacrosse action earlier this week, the Otter Valley boys outlasted visiting Mount Abraham/Vergennes, the Middlebury girls saw their 22-game winning streak come to an end, and the VUHS-Mount Abe girls came up short on the road.

Women's lacrosse to host NCAA contests

MIDDLEBURY — After winning two tough games this past weekend to claim the NESCAC championship on its home turf, the Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team will this weekend also open NCAA Division III tournament play on Kohn Field. 

The 16-2 Panthers at 1 p.m. on Sunday will meet the winner of a 1 p.m. Saturday game on Kohn Field between NEWMAC champion Babson (12-7) and NAC champion Castleton (11-6).

Tide stems MUHS girls' tennis

MIDDLEBURY — Visiting Spaulding defeated the Middlebury Union High School girls’ tennis team on Monday, 6-1. The Tigers, coming off a competitive 4-3 loss to Mount Mansfield last week, dropped to 0-3. 

On Monday No. 3 singles player Elizabeth Bright picked up the Tigers’ point, defeating the Tide’s Faith Redmond, 6-4, 6-3. 

In the other matches: 

•           At No. 1 singles, Whitney Renaud defeated Sierra Barnicle (MUHS), 6-3, 7-5.

MUHS boys' tennis takes pair of matches, now 3-1

BARRE — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ tennis team breezed to a pair of recent wins and now stands at 3-1 for the season. On Monday the Tigers topped shorthanded host Spaulding, 7-0, and on Saturday they dispatched visiting Harwood, 6-1. 

On Monday Spaulding contested only the top three singles matches, all of which the Tigers won in straight sets: 

•           At No. 1 singles, Ziven McCarty (MUHS) defeated Chris Cambio, 6-1, 6-2.

In high school baseball, OV, MUHS win; VUHS tops Eagles

ADDISON COUNTY — Otter Valley and Middlebury kept up their winning ways and Vergennes knocked off Mount Abraham to highlight local high school baseball play earlier this week.

OTTERS

The Otters won twice to move to 6-2 and into fifth place in Division II heading into a game at Mount Abe on Thursday.

On Monday OV edged visiting D-I Mount Anthony, 6-5, with a walk-off win. Payson Williams walked to lead off, moved up on a passed ball, and scored on Josh Beayon’s two-out double.
