Letter to the editor: Many made Mary Hogan Bike Smart training a success

Thanks to all who made last week’s Bike Smart training at Middlebury’s Mary Hogan Elementary School a success. Thanks to Mary Hogan P.E. teachers Sabrina Butterfield and Cyndi Palmer for coordinating and adapting 30 loaner bikes to kindergarteners through sixth-graders.

He has championed their well-being and success for many years, most recently through the FY 2018 omnibus spending bill. The critical programs funded in the omnibus will have a direct impact on the work that the clubs do throughout the state.

Editorial: Green Up Day is one of 'those things you do to support the whole'

This weekend, or any day this week or next, grab a Green Up bag and pick up a little trash near where you live. It will make you feel connected — a small part of a larger whole.

And if you do, even if it’s just for an hour up and down your street for a block or so, you’ll be part of the state’s largest all-volunteer one-day event in which everyone does a little bit for a whole lot of good.

Otter boys play strong against tough baseball teams

BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union High School baseball team continued through its early-season gauntlet last week, splitting two home games against undefeated teams.

The defending Division II champion Otters knocked off Windsor on Wednesday, 4-3, on yet another Nate Hudson walk-off hit, and then came up short on Saturday, 7-0, against D-I Brattleboro and standout pitcher and University of Connecticut recruit Leif Bigelow.

MUHS track fares well at Essex meet

ESSEX — Nineteen members of the Middlebury Union High School track and field team competed this past Wednesday at the Essex vocational meet, and many of them made their mark.

The girls four-by-800-meter relay team, expected to contend for the Division II title, won the event. Competing were Isabel Olson, Katherine Koehler, Camille Malhotra and Caroline Kimble.

Freshman C.J. Bryant, senior Sam Hodges and Olson, a sophomore, also excelled, each placing in the top five in two running events, topped by Bryant’s pair of second-place efforts.

Eagle softball wins two of three on the road

CHITTENDEN COUNTY — The Mount Abraham Union High School softball team improved to 4-1 by taking two out of three weekend games played in Chittenden County against Division I competition.

The defending D-II champs are back on top of the D-II point standings, according to the Vermont Principals’ Association website, just ahead of Fair Haven (6-1).
