Tamara Wight weaves nests from found objects

Many artistic endeavors start in a studio, but basket-weaver Tamara Wight begins her creative process outdoors. On walks through the forest and along Sunset Lake in Brookfield, Vt., her home town, Wight gathers rocks, pebbles and interesting pieces of wood.

She takes these ingredients home and holds onto them until she has a moment of creative inspiration, usually during the night. Then, the rocks and branches become the foundation for her baskets, many of which are on display at Creative Space Gallery in Vergennes.

Beauty or blight? Middlebury solar farm plan draws mixed reactions

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard’s March 27 public hearing on a proposed 4.99-megawatt solar farm off Halladay Road provided further evidence that when it comes to solar panels, the words “beauty” and “blight’ can be used to describe the same thing.

It all depends on whose eyes and which property lines are involved.

Welch touts $3.3 billion to battle opioid addiction, decries stalemate over gun safety

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Congressman Peter Welch is praising a new, $3.3 billion federal commitment to fight opioid addiction, but he’s criticizing House leadership for not allowing the chamber to vote on substantive gun safety measures.

Video: Why did the salamander cross the road?

SALISBURY — On early-spring evenings, with the first relatively warm rains, salamanders and frogs move from upland wooded areas to breeding pools to mate and lay eggs. Often these migrations take the amphibians across roads. At a site in Salisbury, Otter Creek Audubon and the Salisbury Conservation Commission help these amphibians safely reach their destination, collect data on
numbers and species, and raise public awareness of these migrations.

Midd grad Andrew Forsthoefel learns big lessons during epic walk

MIDDLEBURY — On the same day that students across the nation quit their classrooms to protest gun violence, prompting debates among their supporters over “walking out” vs. “walking up,” the Residence at Otter Creek in Middlebury welcomed a walker of epic accomplishment.

Andrew Forsthoefel walked from Pennsylvania to California after he graduated from Middlebury College in 2011. Last year he published a book about the experience, “Walking to Listen: 4,000 Miles Across America, One Story at a Time.”

For Jack Brown, restoring cars is a career and a lifestyle

BRISTOL — Jack Brown has been tinkering with cars for almost as long as he can remember, or in his words, “since I was a pup.”

He grew up in Pennsylvania outside of Philadelphia and in the late 1940s went to boarding school in New Hampshire. Around age 14, Brown started learning about mechanics and taking an active interest in cars. At age 17, he moved back to Philadelphia and enrolled in the Spring Garden Institute where he studied auto mechanics and committed to the trade.
