Former Vergennes alderman David Austin returns to city council

VERGENNES — Former four-term Vergennes City Council member and Planning Commission Chairman David Austin was the pick at last week’s council meeting to become the newest Vergennes alderman.

Austin and another candidate with a long record of public service in Vergennes, Faith Terry, had submitted letters of interest seeking appointment to fill the vacancy created by the February resignation of Mayor Michael Daniels.

Middlebury gets grant to market downtown during rail bridge construction

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is giving the town of Middlebury $75,000 to help promote its downtown businesses and amenities this year during the first phase of work on the Main Street and Merchants Row rail bridges.

The $75,000 is likely to be the first of three, like-sized annual grants VTrans will pass along to Middlebury to aggressively market and support its downtown through 2020, when work will be in full swing on a $71 million tunnel project that will replace two temporary spans.

Vt. Gas snuffs flame in Middlebury — for now

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Gas Systems on Friday said it had temporarily extinguished its “controlled flare” at its Middlebury gate station near the intersection of Route 7 and Exchange St., citing community concerns over the noise emanating from the massive flame.

Single-payer advocates make health care pitch

BRISTOL — Vermonters are dying because they cannot afford health care, Montpelier physician Deb Richter told a gathering of concerned citizens at the Bristol firehouse Thursday night. Patients with little or no health insurance often delay seeking primary care until it is too late, she added.

“Our health care system is a catastrophe,” Richter said.

When you imagine a meal in a Laundromat it’s not glamorous. Maybe you have a candy bar and a bottle of warm soda as you watch your clothes spin around, or perhaps a smashed hamburger from a fast food joint down the road. Either way, it’s not awesome.

That is, it wasn’t awesome until 2010, when Didier and Julianne Murat transformed the original Vergennes Laundromat at 7 Main St. into a French-inspired bakery.

Middlebury says 'no' to tax break for Aqua ViTea

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard has denied Aqua ViTea’s request for tax stabilization, but selectboard members at their Feb. 27 meeting said they want to explore the idea of a revolving loan fund that could help local businesses grow in Addison County’s shire town.

Aqua ViTea, a growing kombucha manufacturer, had requested a five-year suspension of the municipal property tax levy on its headquarters at 153 Pond Lane. That reduction would have totaled around $92,400.

Climate change group seeks test neighborhood

MIDDLEBURY — The Energy Task Force of the Greater Middlebury Climate Economy Initiative is searching for a neighborhood to participate in a pilot program to help residents save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Task Force has outlined ambitious goals for the pilot: to achieve participation by 90 percent of households and significant measures in 50 percent of homes.

The offerings and incentives will be both simple and flexible to provide residents with significant opportunities to reduce costs for electricity, transportation and home heating.
