Mount Abe girls' hoop dream comes true; outlast Slaters for D-II title

BARRE — When the final buzzer sounded on Friday night in the Barre Civic Auditorium not only did it confirm the Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team had defeated Fair Haven, 33-25, for the Division II title, but it also transported the Eagles back in time.

The team’s seniors talked about their first AAU practices with Coach Connie LaRose in fourth grade, the expectations heaped on them in middle school, and the earlier struggles that preceded their 13 straight wins — including Saturday’s final.

Proposal for Brandon solar array criticized; visibility, use of farm land draw fire

BRANDON — A proposed 25-acre solar project just a mile outside downtown Brandon has raised concerns of residents and town officials alike.

The project is planned for two, 12.5-acre parcels at the intersection of Country Club Road and Park Street Extension. The land in question, owned by Bob Brooks, is agricultural and has been used to grow corn for decades.

Conti Solar, an Edison, N.J.-based solar company, is proposing the 2.2-megawatt project, which will produce enough electricity to power 500 homes.

Vergennes OKs Comfort Hill lots; many more eyed in future

VERGENNES — New Haven developer Scott Hardy is adding housing opportunities to Vergennes, but not as quickly as he originally planned.

On Feb. 20 the Vergennes Development Review Board (DRB) approved his four-lot subdivision on Comfort Hill, just past its intersection with High Street, and Hardy is marketing two of those lots, 0.76- and 0.55-acre parcels.

Clerk phones in to Bristol town meeting from maternity bed

BRISTOL — Jen Stetson Myers’s baby was due on Saturday, March 3, but as she left work the day before Myers was focused on the Bristol town meeting scheduled for Monday, March 5. She is, after all, the Bristol town clerk and treasurer.

“I didn’t think I would have the baby over the weekend, and I was planning to attend town meeting,” Myers said in an interview last week. “I was already in the mind-set.”

Her baby, apparently, had a different mind-set.

Orwell students hit the slopes

ORWELL/MENDON — On a snowy Friday in early March, Orwell Village School sixth-grader Jacob Clifford sits on a chairlift at Pico Mountain in Mendon. Normally, he’d be in math class at around this time, but on this day he’s mastering a jump in Pico’s terrain park.

Math is Clifford’s favorite subject, but when asked if he’d rather be skiing, he flashes a toothy smile and nods.

New director takes charge of Middlebury teen center

MIDDLEBURY — Zoe Kaslow made some wonderful contacts at Middlebury College during her four years there as a student and as a leader of the institution’s activities board.

Kaslow, 26, now wants to put those contacts to good use to boost programming for local youth at Addison Central Teens (ACT), an organization she has been leading since Feb. 1.

Middlebury hiker rescued after night lost on Long Trail

HANCOCK — A Middlebury man was found early Friday morning by area rescue teams after apparently getting lost Thursday while hiking on the Long Trail north of the Middlebury Gap off Route 125 in Hancock. Rescue personnel spent most of the morning evacuating Jeffrey Kramer, 27 of Middlebury, who was taken to Porter Hospital for treatment of exposure and frostbite.
