MIDDLEBURY — Dr. Daniel Freilich believes he can become part of the cure for a Congress he said is paralyzed by partisan gridlock and beholden to big money interests.

Freilich, a Brownsville Democrat, U.S. Navy captain and medical doctor, is challenging incumbent U.S. Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., this fall.

VERGENNES — Addison Northwest School District Superintendent JoAn Canning said she had no plans to leave her post before a possible retirement in the next year or two.

But that was before Canning heard in January from a recruiter who had kept her résumé after an unsuccessful job application in 2010, just before she became the Orange Southwest Supervisory Union Superintendent, the post she held for four years before coming to Vergennes in 2014.

MIDDLEBURY — “We need to do this until the term ‘school shooting’ is no longer in our vocabulary,” said Greta Hardy-Mittell, a Middlebury Union High School senior.

On Wednesday, the East Middlebury resident joined around 300 demonstrators — students from MUHS, Middlebury Union Middle School and Middlebury College plus many local residents of all ages — in a gun-control rally on the Cross Street Bridge in Middlebury.

Sand Road dog hoard on porch_8676 copy.jpg

FERRISBURGH — Sand Road resident Lauren Fisher told the Ferrisburgh selectboard last week the barking is worse in the summer.

“It’s all hours of the day and night,” Fisher said. “It wakes us up at 2 a.m.”

Family friend Ziggy Comeau described how the smell hit her when she got out of her car in the Fishers’ driveway, a few yards away from a small ranch home that hosts up to 30 dogs.

“My eyes were burning,” Comeau said. “It was bad.”

New community theater 'shows up' with Anne of Green Gables musical

Picture this: The lights go dark on a theater packed with an eager audience, tension builds in the silence until places are taken and props set. Everyone is frozen; waiting for the cue to begin the scene.

How do you feel?

Some of us get knots in our stomach at the idea of performing, so we imagine ourselves in the audience; others put themselves behind the scenes. But for the theatrically inclined, well, they see themselves front-and-center on the stage.

Sewer leak in Brandon flows into waterway

Posted on March 15, 2018 |
By Lee J. Kahrs

BRANDON — Old pipes and erosion led to a break in a Brandon sewer pipe, spilling over 1 million gallons of raw sewage into the Neshobe River.

The break was discovered on March 7, and the spill was estimated to have begun Feb. 22, two weeks earlier.

Brandon Town Manager Dave Atherton said the area around the pipe, down past Mill Lane almost to the post office, had eroded and exposed the 12-inch concrete sewer pipe, which dates back to the 1930s. The pipe was broken open in two places where it runs along the Neshobe between two manholes.

Jessie Raymond: Embracing the sameness of winter

Posted on March 15, 2018 |
By Jessie Raymond

jessenew ONLINE.jpg

If there’s one thing I love, it’s a long, cold, snowy winter. Everyone knows that about me. And now here we are, in mid-March, with fresh snow on the ground.

Isn’t it great?

I worried that the winter storm we had last week was going to be the last snowfall of the season.

“Boy, I’m going to miss this,” I said, putting on my heavy coat, insulated boots, hat and mittens and tromping out through the snow to feed the chickens, same as I have done twice a day for the past 962 days or so.
