FFA building leaders and stewards for the future

MIDDLEBURY — FFA is a national organization founded by a group of young farmers in 1928. To this day, Vermont’s agricultural traditions are both preserved and modernized thanks to the dedication of today’s generations of stewards of the land, livestock, production, as well as their associated research and management practices.

Formerly known as Future Farmers of America, the group is now known simply as FFA to represent the broader scope of its mission.

Bristol board nears vote on natural gas agreement

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard at its Feb. 19 meeting inched closer to signing a license agreement with Vermont Gas Systems to bring natural gas service to Bristol.

“At some point we’re going to have to say ‘yay’ or ‘nay’ on this,” said selectboard member Peter Coffey. Convinced the pipeline would attract new businesses to Bristol and increase the town’s grand list, he announced he was prepared to vote in favor of the project.

Selectboard member Michelle Perlee also said she would vote “yes.”

Middlebury to host WinterFest extravaganza this Saturday

MIDDLEBURY — The volcanic allure of Chili Fest this year will surrender to the frigid beauty of snow sculptures and other fun features of the town’s first annual “WinterFest” celebration, planned for noon to 6 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Middlebury Recreation Park.

224 contestants enjoy fishing in Lake Dunmore Derby

SALISBURY — Results from the 2018 Lake Dunmore ice fishing Derby are in. The Derby, which was held Feb. 10 and 11 and is organized by the Kampersville Store, drew plenty of entries — 197 adult and 27 youth.

Prizes were awarded as follows:

Adult Bass: 1st Place – Ethan Dragon (3.76 lbs.) $500, 2nd place –Chris Lafountain (3.68 lbs.) $300, 3rd place Dan Drinkwine (3.32 lbs.) $200.

Adult Salmon: 1st place – Scott Miller (2.94 lbs.) $500, 2nd place Lisa Wall (1.89 lbs.) $300, 3rd place Rob Gearwor (1.16 lbs.) $200.

Changing demographics prompt question: What does Mount Abe’s future hold?

BRISTOL — In 15 years, the student population at Mount Abraham Union High School has dropped 33 percent, from almost 1,000 students to 639. That drop in student numbers is part of the reason that the per capita cost of education per pupil has risen so dramatically over that same period.

Will that trend continue? Not necessarily, but the jury is out.

Local family to perform traditional/step-dancing music in Cornwall

The Bolton/Munkres family band, Honey in the Hive, will perform at the Cornwall Town Hall on Sunday, Feb. 25, at 2 p.m. The concert will feature driving fiddle and banjo music, and step-dancing from Appalachian, Cape Breton, Irish and other traditions.

This family band includes Romy on fiddle, flute and feet; Ben on piano, mandolin and melodica; Andrew Munkres on five-string banjo and guitar; and Kristin Bolton on upright bass and feet.
