Vermont Gas puts Bristol plan on hold

BRISTOL — The future of natural gas service in Bristol, which just a few months ago looked like a sure thing, has dimmed in recent weeks.

Vermont Gas Systems (VGS) informed the Vermont Public Utility Commission (PUC) on Dec. 13 that it has paused its permitting efforts for its Bristol distribution line, pending the outcome of a lawsuit filed against the town.

Downtown site sought for Middlebury Farmers Market

MIDDLEBURY — Just two years ago, organizers of the Middlebury Farmers Market were scrambling for a new venue at which to accommodate the more than two dozen vendors who twice each week serve up a diverse menu of fresh veggies, cheeses, fruit, prepared foods and a whole lot more. Temporary parking and traffic problems related to construction on the railroad bridges project downtown prompted the farmers market to look for a new home.

Cornwall couple breeds horses — and builds adaptive bikes

CORNWALL — David Black and Anja Wrede have two passions: facilitating better mobility for people with physical disabilities and raising Dutch Warmblood horses. It was these two sometimes-competing passions that brought them in 2015 to Cornwall.

On Avenir Farm, their 47-acre property off Route 125, the couple now operates their custom adaptive bike-building business, RAD-Innovations, and also raises eight Dutch Warmblood horses.

MONTPELIER — The Addison Independent was recently recognized by its peers in the Vermont journalism community for the excellence of the twice-a-week publication.

The Independent won five awards — including a coveted first place for general excellence — at the annual Vermont Press Association (VPA) convention and awards ceremony held at the Capitol Plaza in Montpelier on Dec. 13.

BRANDON — The Girl Scouts began in 1912 when Juliette Gordon Low organized the first troop of 18 girls in Savannah, Ga. Now, 3.7 million members strong, the Girl Scouts of the United States of America have helped mentor and develop strong female leaders such Lucille Ball, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and astronaut Sally Ride.

Ex-MREMS official gets sentenced for embezzlement

MIDDLEBURY — A former co-director of Middlebury Regional EMS ambulance service has served seven days in jail and will spend the next three years on probation after pleading guilty in October to two felony charges of embezzlement, stemming from allegations that she stole a combined total of $7,802 from the nonprofit over a more than year-long period to pay for personal items, gifts for friends and her own medical expenses.

Shortage of funeral directors in Vermont spurs action

VERMONT — Struggling with a nationwide shortage of funeral directors, the industry in Vermont has teamed up with the Community College of Vermont and state officials to streamline the path to the profession.

The state’s Office of Professional Regulation has created a proposed path aimed at reducing the time and money now required for funeral director training.

The path is aimed at young people and at workers who are seeking a career change. Lawmakers are expected to consider the rule change in the coming legislative session.

Families invited to work toward plastic bag ban

MIDDLEBURY — The environmental organization 350Vermont is inviting Addison County parents to join them for a “Mother-Up” meet-up dinner on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2019, at the Middlebury Recreation Center.

The dinner will feature a time for discussion about organizing a plastic bag ban in Middlebury. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. and is scheduled to run until 7:30 p.m.
