Mark Benton exhibits paintings at WalkOver Gallery

Local artist Mark Benton poses the question: “Rural Industry: An Embellishment or Blemish on the Landscape?” In a series of eight oil paintings, all of which are untitled but many of which are recognizable locations, the artist takes his inquiry to the rural industrial landscape.

“I began this series by simply being caught in the moment,” he said, “prevalently a melancholy moment of catching the light at just the right angle reflected off a lonely piece of utilitarian metal.”

Middlebury Fire Department honors those who serve

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Fire Department and Battell Hose Company held their joint annual awards dinner on Saturday, Dec. 2, at the American Legion Post 27 in Middlebury. The dinner was attended by current, former, and life members of the Middlebury Fire Department, as well as by the members of the board of directors of the Battell Hose Company, and guests.

Chief Shaw presided over the annual presentation of awards recognizing the contributions and efforts of the members of the Middlebury Fire Department.

Mount Abraham forum set for Saturday, January 6

BRISTOL — A group of citizens from the Five Town area will host a community forum to share ideas and discuss the future of the district’s middle and high school on Saturday, Jan. 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Bristol Elementary School in Bristol.

The goal for this forum is to get the whole Five-Town Community actively engaged and empowered in reshaping the school, to hear from people in the community about their ideas about how to make the school a community asset and to bring out the range of concerns and thoughts community members have.

Aerospace plant in Vergennes still probing explosion

VERGENNES — According to a United Technologies Corp. spokesperson this week the company has taken steps to prevent a recurrence of the Dec. 8 explosion that injured four UTC employees at its Panton Road plant in Vergennes, but the exact cause of the event remains under investigation.

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” unfolds in two utterly different locations: an austere, treacherous island in the most remote part of the Galaxy and the vast, infinite sky that is the setting for war. The steep, rocky island establishes a mood of danger while Rey (Daisy Ridley) tries to lure Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) away from his isolation (“It’s time for the Jedi to die”) and back to the life in the sky that he left.

The Book Review: 'Bread and Roses, Too' by Katherine Patterson

The Vermont Humanities Council has selected Vermont author Katherine Paterson’s book “Bread and Roses, Too” as its Vermont Reads book for 2018.

Vermont Reads is a statewide one-book community reading program that began in 2003. VHC provides books for free to communities through an application process as well as resources for developing community book-related activities. Since the beginning of the program, Vermont Reads events have taken place in over 200 Vermont towns.

Editorial: Reflections on 2017 – "Was it all connected to Trump, or did it just seem like it? "

Following the traumatic elections of 2016, it is no surprise that 2017 was a year fraught with chaos, protests and change. Trump was at the political center of much of that chaos as he sought to carry out promises made on the campaign trail, including banning Muslims from certain countries from entering the U.S., repealing the Affordable Care Act, reforming the tax code, pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Accord and passing regulations that favored big business, big banks and the fossil fuel industry.
