Students make a difference with hurricane relief efforts

MIDDLEBURY/VERGENNES — Hurricane Harvey lashed through Texas just as local schools were gearing up for the first day of class. Within the second week of school, Irma was heading for the Florida keys. In response, students and staff have been taking action.

City police remind drivers about speed limits

VERGENNES — As well as handling a variety of incidents between Sept. 11 and 17, Vergennes police also conducted a number of directed patrols in response to citizen concerns about speeding within city limits.

During that seven-day period city police made a dozen such targeted patrols, including multiple patrols on Mountain View Lane, School Street and in the general downtown area. Other areas patrols included Panton Road, West Main Street, New Haven Road, Booth Woods and Green Street.

Letters to the Editor: Middlebury officials need to listen to citizens

For the past several years members of the Middlebury Select Board have authorized the VT League of Cities and Towns to lobby on their behalf against any effort to legalize the recreational use of marijuana in Vermont. Until recently most of us were not aware of this. We find it upsetting that they would have taken a position on this issue without first assessing whether it reflects the town's wishes.

Mary Johnson proceeds with Vergennes child care proposal

VERGENNES — A project that Middlebury’s Mary Johnson Children’s Center officials have eyed for almost two decades could be coming closer to becoming a reality — a childcare center in Vergennes to serve up to 30 preschoolers, toddlers and possibly infants.

Mary Johnson officials are now seeking proposals, as their recent ad reads, “for architectural and engineering services to support a physical feasibility study of creating the Vergennes Children’s Center on Armory Lane,” with a Sept. 29 deadline to respond.

City pool, boosted by swim team, ends year in black

VERGENNES — Thanks to what Vergennes officials called good management and a successful summer for the Vergennes Champs swim team, the city pool will end 2017 about $12,000 in the black, according to City Manager Mel Hawley.

Hawley said during the Sept. 12 city council meeting that the current fund balance for the Sam Fishman Pool stands at $15,660, with a few bills outstanding. Immediately after the meeting he estimated that once those bills are paid roughly $12,000 would remain.

Vt. Student Assistance Corp. to offer free financial aid workshops at local high schools

WINOOSKI — Vermont Student Assistance Corp. will offer free workshops at over 60 local high schools from early  October through mid-December to help families fill out financial aid forms.

These informal workshops offer guidance on filling out the FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid, and the Vermont grant application. The FAFSA is the basis for determining eligibility for federal Pell grants, the Vermont state grant, financial aid from the school that the student attends, and for student loans.

Vermont's first human case of West Nile Virus found in Addison County

Health Department confirms year’s first human case of West Nile Virus

BURLINGTON – Vermont health officials have confirmed the year’s first case of human illness due to West Nile virus. An Addison County resident was diagnosed earlier this month with neuroinvasive disease — a more serious form of the illness which affects the nervous system.
