Brandon gets ready for the Harvest People surge

BRANDON — It’s almost time to build your own “Harvest Person.” That’s one of the draws at the annual Brandon HarvestFest, which, as always, will take place the Sunday before Columbus Day Weekend, Oct. 1 this year.

Because of the downtown road construction, this year’s HarvestFest has moved from Central Park to Estabrook Park north of the village just west of Route 7. It’s still at the usual time — 1-4 p.m.

Victor Nuovo: Power to 'The People' is freedom's foundation

I return to the question: Who are the People? Surely, it is more than a useful fiction or abstraction.

“We the People” refers to actual people: those who directly or indirectly authorized the adoption and ratification of the Constitution. But in the beginning these were not all the people dwelling in the land. Women were excluded, also slaves, and native Americans who were the original occupiers of the land. Only freeborn males were counted: white, English, and mostly Protestant.

Soccer Wrap-up: Tigers blank Eagle boys; VUHS, OV claim wins

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury blanked Mount Abraham to highlight recent boys’ soccer play. In other action between Sept. 20 and 26 the Eagles dropped a road contest, Vergennes won twice, and Otter Valley earned a win and a tie.

Vergennes was set to visit MUHS on Tuesday, but that game was postponed due to excessive heat and humidity.

High school teams come up short in field hockey

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school field hockey play between Sept. 20 and 26, Mount Abraham earned a tie, but Otter Valley and Middlebury came up short.

EAGLES

On Monday the Eagles and visiting Mount Mansfield settled for a 2-2 tie in which both goalies — Mount Abe’s Chessley Jackman and MMU’s Amelia Sanborn — stopped penalty strokes. Jackman finished with 15 saves for the 3-2-2 Eagles and Sanborn stopped 14 shots.

Film lovers unite for Marquis showing of Manhattan Short Film Festival on Oct. 4

Filmgoers in Middlebury will unite with over 100,000 film-lovers around the world this week, Sept. 28-Oct. 8, when the 20th Annual Manhattan Short Film Festival screens at the Marquis Theatre on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 6:30 p.m. Manhattan Short is the only event of its kind. The final 10 films are screened simultaneously across the world during a one-week period, with the Best Film and Best Actor awards determined by ballots cast by audiences in each participating cinema.

In Middlbury, The Marquis will screen the Shorts in the large downstairs theater.

Commodores, Otters defeated in girls' soccer

ADDISON COUNTY — In high school girls’ soccer action between Sept. 21 and 26 Vergennes lost to a top team and Otter Valley dropped its homecoming contest.

Middlebury was set to host Milton and Vergennes to host Missisquoi on Wednesday after our deadline.

Mount Abraham defeated the Tigers, 6-2, in a game covered for the Sept. 25 edition of the Independent.

Lyndon pulls away from Eagle eleven

LYNDON CENTER — Host Lyndon scored four touchdowns in the third quarter on the way to a 42-6 Division II high school football victory over Mount Abraham-Vergennes on Saturday.

The Vikings’ Justin Duncanson ran 19 times for 173 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Justin Joyal threw for 110 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 68 yards. Kayden Lewis returned an interception 27 yards for a TD to cap the third quarter for the Vikings, who led by 7-6 at the half.
